  3. Maidstone United produce remarkable FA Cup upsetpublished at 21:30 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    Ipswich Town 1-2 Maidstone United

FA Cup upsets don't come much bigger than the one we witnessed at the start of the day.

Sixth-tier Maidstone United are through to the fifth round, securing their place among the competition's last 16 alongside the likes of European champions Manchester City, after stunning Championship high-flyers Ipswich Town earlier today - a club 98 places above them in the football pyramid.

They are the first club outside the top five tiers of English football to reach the FA Cup fifth round since Blyth Spartans 46 years ago.

Terrific scenes. This is what it's all about.

  4. 'We were the better team - but must be more ruthless'published at 21:27 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Newcastle

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva, speaking to BBC Sport: "That is football sometimes. You play well but the key moments were not clear for us and that is our fault. The chances that we did create, the amount that we create, we should be more ruthless.

"We arrived so many times in dangerous areas that we have to better decide the last action, the pass or the finish. We have to be stronger in both situations, on the set pieces and with our finishing."

On exiting two competitions in a week, following a Carabao Cup semi-final exit against Liverpool: "This is what happens. We have to be in the right mindset, which we were, if you want to be in the next round but we lost. Congratulations to Newcastle, they played the best way they can tonight [and won]. We were the better team, but again punished by details.

"The fact we are not there [in the next round] is our fault. There's no reason for us to not go again stronger from these moments."

On Harry Wilson's injury: "We'll see. It does not look good but we have to wait for more time to know for sure, hours, days, to do the exams and have the right feedback. Does not look good."

  5. 'A morale boosting win for us'published at 21:24 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

And here is a bit more from Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, this time speaking to BBC Sport: "It was an excellent result, if not our finest performance.

"We had to be really resilient, and scored at an important moment before half-time. That settled us down, we were much better in that period with a counter attack threat and much improved I thought.

"Sean [Longstaff] is capable off both feet, he is a great ball striker and showed with that finish. Dan’s goal was a massive moment in the match, we are a threat from set plays with the height we have."

On whether he feels his team have benefitted from the winter break: "Going into the game I thought we would but sometimes in cup games that does not happen. You have to be resilient and find a way through. That was a morale boosting win for us after the City game and hopefully that gives us confidence going into the Aston Villa match."

And on if he is confident on keeping hold of his best players: "I am not sure confident is the word, we hope to, from my side lets wait and see, not much has happened around European football but fingers crossed it is uneventful for us."

  7. 'The performance was there but we were punished'published at 21:18 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Newcastle

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva, speaking to ITV4: "Yes, definitely more disappointed for the result than the performance.

"Looking at the match as a whole we were the more dominant team. We were the team that played better. I really believe that we deserved much more from the game.

"At this level when you concede, we almost did not give anything [chances] for them, but when you concede really sloppy goals, of course by the end of the game you are punished.

"You cannot have so much control... [And not score]. We executed the game plan perfectly, we did not give Newcastle the chance to set up the game in their way.

"We pressed them really high until the 70th minute. They scored from two set pieces, we have been doing well with them this season and tonight the focus is not there so we are punished."

  8. 'You win these types of games in the mind'published at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to ITV4: "Difficult game, not our finest performance. I think you win these types of games in the mind.

"The motivation had to be there, the resilience had to be there, and both were. The second half was better in terms of technical delivery. We are pleased to win and keep a clean sheet, and score two good goals."

On the slow start: "We knew it was going to be difficult tonight. You come to this ground, it is a Premier League [level] game. We've got our injury troubles and are not at our fluent best.

"In these sorts of games that is when you have to try and dig out a result, and try and get yourself into the next round. That is where I have to praise the players - we weren't at our best in the first half but we came in at the break 1-0 which was a good scoreline for us."

On being clinical for the goals: "Sean's finish is a great shot with his left foot, and Dan, well I don't think he could have missed that. He has scored some important goals for us, none more so than last year in our cup run to the Carabao Cup final. That second goal was all important for us."

On the possibility of reaching Wembley: "It would be incredible to do it in the FA Cup. The Carabao Cup whetted the appetite for us, it was an incredible day, the scenes beforehand, the support we had. We were so disappointed not to deliver the result. Hopefully we can go a long way in this competition this year."

  9. 'This one's for the travelling fans'published at 21:11 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

    FT: Fulham 0-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Here's what Newcastle's Dan Burn had to say, speaking to ITV: "It's huge, fair play to them [the fans] to come all this way on a Saturday night, we have not been great on the road but we wanted to put on a performance for them.

"We are still not firing on all cylinders, we are waiting for bodies to come back but you saw glimpses of what we can do tonight."

On his goal: "It dropped straight at my feet so I had to smash it in. I'd have normally missed it so I am happy to get it on target.

"It has been such a long time since the club has won something, we’ve made a big thing over the last two seasons about that and we have four games to either get to the final or win it so let’s see who we get in the next round and hopefully push on."

Fulham looked leggy. Every cross Dan Burn headed away, Fabian Schar was blocking. They stopped playing at 2-0, they could have had more. Fulham didn’t compete and came up very short. They were at home against a team with a terrible away record. Maybe it was a game too far and fatigue set in. Everyone keeps talking about strikers but what happens with good teams is everyone else starts to chip in, everyone has to take responsibility so the striker is not under pressure to be the only one who scores. When a team isn’t scoring one of you has got a chance to go and be the hero but it didn’t happen for Fulham today.

Newcastle are good enough. When they've got their players back, they can take anyone at St James's Park. No team will want to be drawn there in tomorrow's draw.

Newcastle didn't even play well, but I think Fulham were just rocked and coming back off the Liverpool defeat, I think they made too many changes. Newcastle easily deserved their win. Marco Silva will be devastated with the nature of the defeat, conceding two goals from corners is upsetting at any time.

Fulham's next game is against Everton at home, they have to go full strength. They've only got one win in five in the league, but they have got the strength to turn it around.

  16. Postpublished at 20:57 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January

Goals in each half from corners from Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn have put Newcastle into the hat.

Fulham had plenty of the game but just couldn't land a telling blow and they are out of two cup competitions in just a few days.

    Fulham 0-2 Newcastle

It's an easy skill as well, Tom Cairney should score. He allows it to come on strong left side, and all he has to do is hit the target.

  20. CLOSE!published at 90+5 mins

Oh what a chance! That would have made the final minute interesting as Tom Cairney has a free shot on goal from about 15 yards out but opened up his body too mucn and skews a shot wide.
