  1. CLOSE!published at 41 mins

    Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa

    Almost!

Cape Verde race clear down the left, the ball is cut-back to captain Ryan Mendes - he has to score!

Mendes hesitates, beats one marker but his shot is eventually blocked by a wall of white shirts. What a waste!

    Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa

South Africa look shaky and don't deal with a corner well, as Khuliso Mudau almost slices a clearance into his own net.

The ball then falls to Garry Rodrigues who has a shot from a tight angle blocked.

  3. CLOSE!published at 37 mins

    Now we're cooking!

Cape Verde spring into life as Ryan Mendes whips in a low, pacey cross which deflects out to Kenny Rocha.

The midfielder gets his head over the ball and drills an effort towards the bottom corner, but it's blocked by a South Africa defender.

Cape Verde’s Bubista is one of the new breed of coaches.

Dressed in jeans, t-shirt and smart trainers (is that the correct term for what all the pundits wear on TV these days?), he never stops prowling the edge of his technical area in front of me.

South Africa’s Hugo Broos, however, has only now appeared for the cooling break.

Given the fare on show so far, it is no surprise the 71-year-old Belgian, who won the Nations Cup with Cameroon in 2017, had not seen anything worth leaving his seat for.

We're back playing again. Cape Verde's corner doesn't beat the first defender.

    Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa

Cape Verde win a corner and we go into the cooling break goalless.

This match is the definition of even. On a knife edge.

That win over Morocco must have given South Africa a lot of belief.

You can see the talent and confidence coursing through everybody in this match.

Not this time for Teboho Mokoena who scored a brilliant free-kick against Morocco in the last 16.

His set-piece is knocked straight into the wall.

Oooooh, now then, this could be dangerous.

South Africa have a free-kick right on the edge of the box after a late sliding tackle from Ryan Mendes on Teboho Mokoena.

Cape Verde captain Mendes is booked.

Shame that, although most of Yamassoukro is probably still partying after Ivory Coast's winner earlier! Not caught up yet? Check out the report.

Well, this is all rather strange.

Stewards have gone into the seating behind the two goals and are shepherding the sparse crowd into the section of the stadium that runs along the touchline opposite to me.

Hundreds of people are up and streaming through the aisles.

One for the TV cameras perhaps? Whatever the reason, the atmosphere in the stadium is currently more akin to a school trip than a quarter-final at major international football tournament.

South Africa aren't as crisp as they were against Morocco.

They knock the ball around quite nicely on the edge of the Cape Verde area, but then a heavy touch brings their attack to an end before it really gets going.

Went to Cape Verde for our honeymoon, then back again the year after. Fell in love with the place and the people, now I'm falling in love with their national team. Come on Cape Verde!

It's opening up now. Cape Verde come forward, playing some lovely stuff, but Ryan Mendes drives a shot just wide of the far post.

Themba Zwane should have done better. It just needed a toe poke. He dragged it, he was asking too much of himself.

Suddenly much better from South Africa who move fluidly to split open Cape Verde's defence.

Possession falls to Themba Zwane but he scuffs his shot just wide.

Teboho Mokoena has a taste for shots from range now but this is truly awful.

A volley sits up for him about 40 yards out but he gets far too much on it and fires the ball over the running track and into row z.

  19. Postpublished at 11 mins

First shot! South Africa's Teboho Mokoena blasts an effort from range which is straight at Vozinha in the Cape Verde net. Decent, open tie so far.

Now South Africa spring forward, they are the favourites for this one by the way.

Aubrey Modiba bursts forward down the left but skews his cross out of play. Not great that.
