We should have sold Broja a while ago. This idea of having injuries is irrelevant as our ‘bloated’ squad has enough talent for a season. There’s no energy, joy, or organisation and also, we need to stop buying-to-loan players. We need players who want to turn up to training and games with the bit between their teeth.

It will be interesting to see if Broja does go and if so, if Chelsea will sign a striker to replace him. I personally think he is better than Jackson at the moment, but who knows.

  3. Wolves quoted £5m loan fee for Brojapublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

One deal looking unlikely to happen is Wolves' attempt to sign Brazil international Yuri Alberto from Corinthians.

Gary O'Neil has been desperate to sign an authentic 'number nine' before the window shuts and negotiations seemed to have reached a positive conclusion.

However, Wolves backed off when further fees were demanded as part of the deal.

There is interest in Armando Broja but Chelsea's loan fee demand of £5m is currently closing off that avenue.

It is hardly ideal Wolves are one of four teams playing tonight. When their game against Manchester United finishes there will be less than an hour until the transfer window closes.

Obviously, managers are not across the finer details of contract negotiations but they quite like to be kept in the loop.

Chelsea are now prepared to let Armando Broja leave on loan without an obligation to make the move permanent, according to the London Evening Standard.

The Albania forward, 22, is attracting interest from both Fulham and Wolves.

According to the report, Chelsea were initially holding out for a permanent sale or the promise of one in the summer.

It's exactly a year ago since Chelsea signed Benfica's Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez for a British record 121m euro (£107m) transfer fee.

Absolutely no sign of that amount of cash being paid on this deadline day.

For the record, Fernandez has made 37 Premier League appearances in the past 12 months, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

Nottingham Forest have signed Portugal Under-20 striker Rodrigo Ribeiro on loan from Sporting Lisbon.

The 18-year-old has joined Forest on loan for the remainder of the season, in a deal which could become permanent.

Ribeiro came through the ranks at Sporting and made his professional debut in their Champions League game against Manchester City in March 2022.

He scored six goals in nine matches as Sporting reached the semi-finals of the Uefa Youth League last season.

Brighton midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud has joined Bundesliga side Stuttgart on loan until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old joined Albion in June 2023 from Borussia Dortmund and has made 14 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Technical director David Weir said: “This is a good move for Mahmoud. It will give him an opportunity to play regularly for a side doing very well towards the top of the Bundesliga."

Dahoud will be reunited in Stuttgart with fellow Albion loanee Deniz Undav, who has scored 12 Bundesliga goals so far this season.

  10. 'Liverpool won't crack quickly'published at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

    Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea

    Mario Melchiot
Former Chelsea defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don’t see Liverpool cracking quickly. When the news came out for Jurgen Klopp, winning the league will not be anything better than him walking out with his head held high.

Liverpool looked ready but also much fitter than the Chelsea side.

We should not forget the history because we were raving about Trent Alexander-Arnold for so long, but the young kid (Conor Bradley) is bringing competition.

Bradley is a great talent, he’s proven himself. He's played in top games, he scored and assisted two.

After Trent Alexander-Arnold's injury was confirmed, Conor Bradley came into the Liverpool starting XI for their League Cup game with Fulham on 10 January and did not look out of place as the Reds won 2-1.

The 20-year-old got an assist in his first Premier League start - the 4-0 thrashing of Bournemouth on 21 January - and followed that up with a goal and two more assists against Chelsea.

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, said: "We don't want to go too early on Conor Bradley, but when someone comes into a team of Liverpool's stature then of course there is always comparisons.

"The early signs are he defensively looks sound, his goal was so impressive with his composure and how he found the far corner.

"He barely wasted a pass and looks like a really mature player, physically he looks excellent and like all the Liverpool players he can really handle the ball."

Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright described the Northern Ireland international as an "unbelievable find".

  12. Quiet day expected at Anfieldpublished at 08:47 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Liverpool will be a very quiet place on transfer deadline day as they sit top of the Premier League, chasing four trophies, and with manager Jurgen Klopp moving towards the end of his reign.

There may be one or two loan bids for second-string squad members, with Nat Phillips already joining Cardiff City on loan and fellow defender Owen Beck making a similar move back to Dundee, but no big deals will be happening.

Liverpool’s burgeoning academy has reduced any urgency, as seen in the development of right-back Conor Bradley, who scored in an outstanding individual performance in the 4-1 win against Chelsea, and Jarell Quansah, who has also shown his class this season.

At the start of this season there was talk of Liverpool needing cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold and further reinforcements in central defence. Not any more.

The more serious business will presumably wait until the summer, when there is clarity on the managerial situation and Klopp’s successor has been found.

Clubs across Europe will have been keeping an eye on the top performers at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the underdogs have consistently impressed.

A host of players have produced scout-pleasing performances at a tournament full of surprises and entertainment in Ivory Coast.

As the knockout stage continues, BBC Sport Africa has picked out six stars who could be snapped up by top European clubs.

Four of them are yet to play in one of the top five leagues on the continent.

And, with three aged 22 or under and the transfer window set to close on Thursday, it may not be long before their suitors begin to bid.

The tournament resumes with the quarter-finals being played on Friday and Saturday.

    Tottenham 3-2 Brentford

    Emma Smith
    BBC Sport

Tottenham fans hoped to see James Maddison's trademark dart-throwing goal celebration against Brentford on Wednesday night, on his first start for nearly three months.

They saw it three times - and not once from Maddison. The first time was not even from a Spurs player.

Maddison starred for Spurs in their 3-2 Premier League win, making his first start since 6 November when he injured his ankle in the chaotic home defeat by Chelsea.

Things started badly for Maddison and Spurs however, as Brentford broke their high line in the 15th minute through Neal Maupay bundling home his 100th career goal.

Maupay marked the moment by stealing Maddison's celebration, throwing mock darts towards an enraged home support.

Maddison was none too impressed, and was captured on camera exchanging words and unfriendly hugs with Maupay afterwards.

"I just said to him, he hasn't scored enough goals of his own in the last few years to have his own celebration, so he had to copy mine," Maddison told TNT Sports. "Short story, ended well for us."

I am not expecting a particularly busy day at Manchester United.

The one deal I was expecting would be completed was actually confirmed late last night.

Uruguay's World Cup star Facundo Pellistri has joined La Liga outfit Granada on loan.

Pellistri is one of those players who flatters to deceive.

United have too many of them and with no European football in the second half of the season, it was better to let him get some game time elsewhere.

Matty Renton,The Magpie Channel TV, external

The Magpies find themselves ridiculously threadbare after an unprecedented injury crisis, yet still haven't made a single signing. This is down to the constraints of Financial Fair Play. Newcastle must sell in order to invest.

As it stands, there is talk of Miguel Almiron leaving to go to Saudi Arabia and Jamal Lascelles departing for Turkey. Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier exit rumours are being dismissed by Eddie Howe.

The sale of Paraguay international Almiron in particular would hugely benefit FFP and allow the Toon to make some late moves in the window.

It's clear as day Newcastle need a midfielder. With the news of Joelinton being ruled out for the rest of the season, the Magpies currently only have three fit players in midfield. We are relying on 17-year-old Lewis Miley to continue to shine week in, week out.

Now into the fifth round of the FA Cup, it is paramount we sign a midfielder before the window shuts. Not doing so would be a huge dent in any hopes for silverware or European football again next season.
