  2. 'Opportunity for us to go level on top is really exciting'published at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2024

Brighton v Man City (12:30 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor speaking to BBC Sport: "It’s the one competition we have left. Outside of what Chelsea have done, nobody has done it for a long time. We’re right in there. Our league form has been fantastic. Our start to the season has been really good.

"A little bit of disappointment in the cup competitions but the margins were really tight. I expect the same today. I don’t expect it to be an easy game. Opportunity for us to go level on top and that’s really exciting. If you had given us that with seven games to go we would have really taken it."

On Filippa Angeldahl's absence: "Just a slight hamstring issue that she had the last couple of days. Hopefully I don’t think it will be too long."

On Chelsea's win over Arsenal on Friday: "Those games can run away from you really quickly like it did for arsenal and it’s really difficult when that happens. Both teams and us included are capable of doing that."

Better from Liverpool as a quick interchange has Marie-Therese Hobinger running into the area.

She's just unable to shift the ball enough to get a shot away and the visitors clear.

Bristol City have responded pretty well to going behind, forcing a corner, but the hosts are able to deal with it.

United have a dangerous free-kick on the left but it's again pretty poor from Katie Zelem as it is cleared at the near post.

    Lovely goal.

Lucia Garcia receives the ball with her back to goal but quickly lays off for Lisa Naalsund.

The Norwegian drives through midfield and the Bristol City defence just keep dropping off her.

It allows her to get into the area and she places a left-footed effort into the bottom corner.

  12. Cup disappointment for Citypublished at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2024

Brighton v Man City (12:30 GMT)

It's been a pretty disappointing couple of weeks for Manchester City, who found themselves knocked out of both cup competitions in the space of three days.

First, Chelsea beat Gareth Taylor's side 1-0 in the Continental Cup semi-final at the Joie Stadium.

Then, Tottenham knocked them out of the FA Cup after Beth England scored late to cancel out Mary Fowler's early goal and send the game to penalties with Spurs coming out on top to reach the semi-final.

It meant City have failed to progress from the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the club's history.

They'll be looking to bounce back today with the Women's Super League their last chance of winning some silverware this season.

Bristol City manager Lauren Smith says everybody has her bottom-of-the-table side "already beaten" by Manchester United going into their game on Sunday.

The Robins are six points from safety in the Women's Super League.

They lost 7-3 to Brighton in their last outing and have won just once in 15 games this season.

"We're already on the underdog side of things, what else can happen that's worse than that?" Smith told BBC Radio Bristol.

"It's probably part of the frustration of the last few games, they were the teams in and around us, that we've not been able to close that gap.

"The teams that are in the top five that we're coming up against, realistically, we're already beaten by them by everybody else.

"Removing the pressure of must-win games will hopefully give us another confidence to be able to go into games not all-out expecting that this is a game that must be a win."

It has been a difficult season for Manchester United after their impressive progress last campaign.

Manager Marc Skinner has been absent this week, ahead of the birth of his second child, but is expected to be on the touchline for the game.

“I think every game is dangerous in this league,” assistant coach Charlotte Healy said.

“You only have to look at results across the league with every team this season. Every team can bring threats on their day; we know Lauren’s [Smith] team will be organised, we know they will have a lot of fight.

“From the games I’ve watched, Bristol City have played really well in some of them but they haven’t picked up the results.

"I saw Lauren’s comments that people will have them already beaten but we certainly don’t. We’ve worked really hard this week to make sure that we are prepared and that we build on the Brighton performance. There will be no underestimating Bristol City that’s for sure.”
