Cole Palmer was hugely influential as Chelsea saw off Newcastle in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer struck in the 57th minute, taking a touch to get the ball out of his feet before drilling hard and low past goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The Blues had gone ahead early after Sven Botman's poor clearance was pounced on by Palmer, his shot being cleverly steered into the bottom corner by Nicolas Jackson for his second goal in as many league games.

Aleksander Isak's powerful effort from the edge of the area just before the break gave Newcastle hope before Palmer restored Chelsea's lead.

Substitute Mykhailo Mudryk took the ball off team-mate Conor Gallagher and ran through the Newcastle defence before rounding Dubravka to finish from a tight angle.

Jacob Murphy produced a thumping finish into the top corner on the 90-minute mark but Mauricio Pochettino's side hung on for their 11th win of the campaign.

Chelsea remain 11th in the table, with a game in hand on Newcastle who are a point and a place above them.

  3. 'The players love Pochettino'published at 22:53 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March

    FT: Chelsea 3-2 Newcastle

    Chelsea

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "When they scored we thought we better defend better than we did than when we conceded. It was a great goal [from Jacob Murphy], but to get three points is a step in the right direction."

On Mudryk and Jackson scoring: "We know as a team the quality they have, them performing is really encouraging. Of course scoring a goal like they did would give anyone confidence."

On possible England call-up: "Hopefully we will see, it is game-by-game and hopefully I put in good performances - we'll see what happens."

On Pochettino and pressure of fans: “It's important again we win football matches, the fans will be happy and we have to try do that.

“The way he [Pochettino] treats us everyday the players love him and I sure the fans will as a result."

On it being a good season if they qualify for Europe: “I don’t about a good season, but better than not being in Europe - game-by-game and we'll see how we finish."

  4. Gordon 'doesn’t look too good' - Howepublished at 22:49 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I thought it was a game in the balance and an open game. The game got away from us with the goals we conceded which were really poor from our perspective - they were self-induced.

“Wherever you play you have to pride yourself being tight and I don’t think Chelsea had an abundance of chances tonight. But the way the goals came from our perspective is hugely frustrating as we know the details have to get better.

"There was a lot of good in our performance I thought we attacked well with good fluency in our play and getting into dangerous areas - the intention was there. I thought we were in total control of the game, but certainly stuff for us to look at."

On Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon injury concerns: "I think Burn is OK, but I don’t know that 100%.

"Gordon looks like a knee problem and it doesn’t look too good at the moment - it is unclear."

    On Mykhailo Mudryk...

I am pleased he scored, it has not been easy for him [at Chelsea].

I saw him in the Champions League a few years ago and I though there was a player there - hopefully this is the start of something.

  6. 'Not good enough overall'published at 22:42 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March

    FT: Chelsea 3-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a strange game, frustrating conceding from their first attack. I thought we were really good in spells, but not good enough overall. I thought the goals we conceded were really poor.

"We were competitive, but the final ball was not good enough. Their first goal was out of nothing, all three goals [conceded] have the similar characteristics and we didn't defend these situations well enough and you are going to lose if you do that.

"It's a similar feeling over the last few months on the road. We know with the quality of players to defend better than that. It was not a bad performance, just inconsistent at times. There's promise that we can hit the heights, but we're not doing it enough."

On injuries to Anthony Gordon and Dan Burn: "Anthony has a knee injury. There was no moment, he just felt it and we don't know how bad he is. It happened quite early in the game, no moment when he felt the injury, it was just a pain there. Dan Burn, I don't think he is too bad."

On right-back Tino Livramento impressing in front of England manager Gareth Southgate: "Tino is not far away [from a call-up]. He's got huge competition in that area and I'm sure he will be in the frame. He has all the quality, he attacked very well in the first half, it was a good performance from him."

  7. 'We are building something different'published at 22:35 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March

    FT: Chelsea 3-2 Newcastle

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Football, sometimes you enjoy and sometimes you suffer.

“We played a very good team with amazing players, it was really tough. We made the victory, but we keep looking forward and moving forward - the most important is the three points.

“It is important for offensive players to feel the confidence and we know we can win games scoring goals, but a little disappointed the way we conceded with two mistakes that should never happen, but that is how we become more mature - we need to keep pushing."

On form: “The only difficult result was extra-time [League Cup final against Liverpool].

“I cannot do anything of the frustration of last season, last season was a nightmare to win a game here [Stamford Bridge] now we are winning games and we are solid.

“We are building something different and we need to accept it. Today the fans were good, we need to keep moving and being strong."

  9. 'So much talent around Chelsea'published at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March

    FT: Chelsea 3-2 Newcastle

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalscorer Cole Palmer, speaking to Sky Sports, says: "We've had some difficult results, obviously the cup final against Liverpool so to get the points is vital. We showed passion, courage winning the second ball and not getting bullied. As a young team we're going to make mistakes."

On moving from Manchester City to Chelsea last summer: "I thought I was ready to play football week in, week out and that's the reason. I just wanted to showcase my ability and thankfully it has paid off. It was a very difficult decision to leave City, I was there since six years old. I was ready to play football, had a chat with my family, had a chat with the club and moved to Chelsea."

On getting into Gareth Southgate's England squad for the Euros: "If you had told me at the start of the season I had a chance to go to the Euros I wouldn't have believed it. I will just take it each game as it comes and see what happens in the summer."

On Chelsea's critics: "There's so much talent around Chelsea that the fans don't see and you [the media] don't see. If not next season, the season after, you will see it sooner or later. We're still in the FA Cup and hopefully win on Sunday to get to Wembley again."

  10. 'Baby steps for Chelsea'published at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March

Both teams have got something to salvage from the season.

If Chelsea could sneak into Europe from where they were at one stage [would be a positive].

It's baby steps for Chelsea at the moment, get the win move up the table and get in-and-around Europe.

Just looking at the match stats. When was the last time a team won, scored three goals, but didn't have a corner in the whole match? Chelsea achieved just that.
