We thought Newcastle would sit back in their shape to make it difficult and then counter-attack, but they are pushing up the pitch.

It's been a struggle since Martin Dubravka took over from Nick Pope earlier in the season.

Cole Palmer has an assist to his name and looks to get on the scoresheet himself. He's on the angle of the penalty area and shoots low at goal but it is easily dealt with by Martin Dubravka.

There was a sense of shock that it ended up in the back of the net.

As Malo Gusto went forward Anthony Gordon has not followed him back.

It's an outlet for Chelsea, Gusto has all the time in the world to cross it and it's a poor clearance from Sven Botman - he has to put his foot through it.

A clever little flick from Nicolas Jackson.

Chelsea hit the front after only seven minutes. Malo Gusto crosses from the right and Sven Botman makes a mess of the clearance, only finding Cole Palmer.

He shoots at goal from 20 yards out and maybe it's going wide but Nicolas Jackson, with his back to goal, is able to flick the ball into the bottom corner and into the net.

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson tries to chase down a ball forwards, hoping to put the goalkeeper under pressure.

But Martin Dubravka avoids conceding a goal like Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale did against Brentford at the weekend and manages to clear his lines just in time.

I reckon the Geordies will sock it to the disorganised Chelsea defence tonight. The fans will be on the players’ backs early doors and it will be nervy.

Hope Poch gets a chance to keep building and shaping this young team. He's hungry for English hardware, and he has plenty of young talent to work with. Patience please!

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to Sky Sports.

On Conor Gallagher and Marc Cucurella being named in starting 11: "Both were involved against Brentford and they had a good week. It is important we start with him [Marc Cucurella] as he is OK. Conor Gallagher is in a good condition [after struggling with illness] and that is why they are ready to play."

On winning: "It's an important game and important three points.

"The performance needs to be good to create more and to help us achieve what we want.

"From the beginning we need to start well and create from the beginning. Then we need good energy to help the players perform."

On Newcastle: "Similar to us both we are a bit unpredictable in our performance.

"Newcastle have good players and a good team, we need to expect that they are going to have a very good performance.

"Of course we need to match them in everything and be better - it is going to be a tough game."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports: "Our ambitions are to get back to our best performance levels. It has been a challenging season. The season has shown a couple of areas we can improve on and we are trying to get to that level in a consistent way

"Tactically we are slightly different, we are never the same two games in a row. We have prepared for Chelsea and there has been a focus on our defensive performance.

"For a long time [last season] defensively we have been good, so to get back to our best defensively will be the key to winning up until the end of the season."

On Joe Willock's return: "Huge for us, he is such an important player.

"We have missed his energy and his goal scoring ability we saw that against Arsenal when he scored a trademark Joe Willock goal.

"He has been a big miss for us and our midfield has been stretched too those players have done well to keep going so it is nice to have some strength in depth.

"I personally haven't set him [Willock] any target's. The key thing for me was to continue improving, he comeback in pre-season really fit and determined to show people how good he is, his general work-rate has been first class."

On record against Chelsea: "Mine isn't too bad.

"We [Bournemouth] had some good wins historically. Newcastle's record here hasn't been too good but we are looking to put that right."

On Cole Palmer or Anthony Gordon for England...

I have been impressed with Cole Palmer with his emergence in the Chelsea team, but I would take Anthony Gordon because the way Cole plays is not too dissimilar to Phil Foden - you need something else like a bit more pace.

You cannot underestimate Cole's qualities, the only difference is the pace aspect. Gordon having the season he is having you could have that pace off the bench [at the Euros].

Anthony Gordon could become the first Newcastle player to score in three consecutive matches against Chelsea.

The 23-year-old has the highest amount of goal involvements of any Newcastle United player in the Premier League this season.

Gordon has racked up nine goals and five assists in 27 Premier League appearances - his best season on record.

  19. Chelsea criticism 'completely unfair' - Pochettinopublished at 19:43 Greenwich Mean Time 11 March

Chelsea have the youngest squad in the league since co-owner Todd Boehly embarked on a mission to clear out the club’s more established players in favour of expensive but less experienced recruits, and Mauricio Pochettino feels some of the analysis has been out of order.

After losing to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, ex-Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville branded the Chelsea players as 'blue billion pound bottle jobs'.

"The players are young, but we like to help them," said Pochettino. "We like to talk, to train, to support. We are supporting them. The players are so young, playing at Wembley in a final. Maybe they didn’t sleep the night before. Sometimes, to analyse with different parameters and the way that you assess is completely unfair.

“The fans are not going to love any more another coach at Chelsea. If you compare with the past, when you are in a different project, people need to understand. I’ve tried to explain. I talk, I move my mouth, but you don’t hear.

“I knew it was going to be tough. I knew we were going to need time and belief. The project is about young players, building a new team.”

Problem with both teams this season is that they've been consistently inconsistent. Injuries have played a major part in disrupting any attempt to get a settled side. But, there's still plenty to play for with European places up for grabs.
