    Inter Milan 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Inter's Lautaro Martinez has a shot blocked and the ball then bounces up on to the arm of Atletico defender Nahuel Molina. A huge roar from the home fans who want a penalty, but the referee says it was accidental and nothing is given.

A decent run forwards from Atletico's Samuel Lino and he gets to the byeline and his cross is palmed away by Yann Sommer in the Inter goal. Atletico come again and Lino looks to curl one into the bottom corner, but the angles are wrong and wide it goes.

Part of the problem for Atletico at the moment is that they do not have Alvaro Morata up front, that focal point at the top of the pitch. They don't have anyone to play the ball up to to move up the pitch.

That is certainly not Antoine Griezmann's game, so they will need to play through that area of the pitch instead, which is not easy to do.

No shots on target from either side yet. Malik Tillman tries to change that with an effort from distance, only to see it charged down by the away defence.

Marcus Thuram is lightning quick isn't he?

Every time the ball goes in behind he is chasing and harrying those Atleti defenders. He will not be giving them a moment's peace this evening.

  6. San Siro pays tribute to Brehmepublished at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

    Inter Milan 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Before we got under way at the San Siro there was a tribute to former Germany defender Andreas Brehme, who sadly passed away earlier today.

Brehme scored the only goal in the 1990 World Cup final as West Germany beat Argentina and spent four years with Inter Milan from 1988 to 1992, winning Serie A, the Italian Super Cup and Uefa Cup during that spell.

  7. 'Griezmann is special but he is surrounded by quality at Atletico'published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

    Inter Milan 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann is a special, special player for Atletico Madrid. His numbers and performances have been very good this season and don't forget he has some quality players around him in this side.

He will have a free role tonight, which will suit him down to the ground. He is an intelligent player and is the most important of any in that side.

If Inter Milan over-commit at any point tonight in an attempt to break Atletico down, then they could end up with problems going the other way. Sometimes it only takes one or two chances.

We have had a very, very late change to the Borussia Dortmund team - and a key one at that as goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has had to withdraw because of a muscle problem, with Alexander Meyer coming in.

I think we can expect goals from Inter this evening.

They have such a clear identity and way they want to play, and I hope everyone gets to see Marcus Thuram up alongside Lautaro Martinez because they really do bring the best out in each other.

Thuram has already scored ten goals and got seven assists in Serie A this season, Lautaro is on 21 league goals too.

Thuram is so good at not only scoring but annoying defenders and forcing own goals, which he did so in back to back games recently. His ability to put defenders under pressure, go for a challenge and force a mistake is amazing and he just knows how to impose himself in a game.

Inter Milan v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

    • The only previous meeting between Inter Milan and Atlético de Madrid was in the 2010 Super Cup, won 2-0 by the Spaniards thanks to goals from Jose Antonio Reyes and Sergio Agüero.
    • This will be Inter’s first Champions League knockout match against a Spanish side since the 2009-10 semi-final, when Jose Mourinho’s Inter eliminated Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate. Atletico last faced an Italian side in the knockouts in the 2018-19 last 16 – after winning 2-0 in the first leg against Juventus, they lost 3-0 in the second leg and were eliminated.
    • Inter have only lost one of their past 13 games in the Champions League (won seven, drawn five), with that lone defeat coming in last season’s final against Manchester City. The Italian side have kept a clean sheet in 62% of the matches they’ve played in this run (8/13), and only conceded nine goals in total.

Inter Milan v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

Atletico, fourth in La Liga, go into this match in good goalscoring form as they ran out 5-0 winners over Las Palmas on Saturday.

Marcos Llorente and Angel Correa scored two apiece and Memphis Depay rounded things out in a one-sided contest.

  14. 'Both teams will fight for it'published at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

Inter Milan v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

Diego Simeone has traditionally been associated with pragmatic, defensive football during his successful period in Madrid and while Atletico have lost ground in the La Liga title race in recent weeks, they are in the last four of the Copa del Rey.

Inter boss Simone Inzaghi revealed he had closely analysed Atletico’s last four fixtures, which includes a 5-0 thrashing of Las Palmas, defeats to Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao and a draw at Real Madrid, but knows it will be hard to predict what type of fixture will occur on Tuesday night.

He added: “Each coach has their own approach. I appreciate him a lot.

“I watched Atletico this year and I can only say they play great football but I cannot tell you what type of game it will be because both teams will fight for it.

“Atletico have changed style, they were very aggressive in the last game they played but against Real Madrid they had a different attitude. They pass the ball a lot more than before.

“We will do our best. There will be a great atmosphere, we are looking forward to playing this game and as usual playing our type of football.”

  15. 'An intriguing tie'published at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

Inter Milan v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

This tie is intriguing on so many levels.

Inter are a team that is better than the side that got the club to the final last year. They are younger, and have plenty of movement and energy going forward. They also have plenty of strength in depth.

Atletico have plenty of history in this competition, they have a manager in Diego Simeone who knows European football and the Champions League. So many good players will be on display, the likes of Antoine Griezmann, who has fantastic numbers during his time at the club, an amazing player.

  16. Italy and Germany lead the race for extra Champions League spotspublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

Uefa have published an update on the current situation regarding the additional two Champions League qualification spots for next season.

Essentially, the two countries with the highest average number of ranking points per competing clubs in this season’s three European competitions will get the spots, with the clubs immediately outside the Champions League qualification spots in the respective countries getting them.

The way the system works, it is almost certain one of the ‘big’ leagues will get the slots. For England that would mean the fifth place Premier League team.

Currently, Italy and Germany are first and second (England third) and if it stayed like that – and the league tables stayed the same – Bologna and RB Leipzig would qualify.

However, England’s situation will worsen this week as teams who get through the Europa League and Europa Conference League play-off rounds get points and England has no-one playing in them.

Manchester United and Newcastle getting knocked out of the Champions League group stage will obviously reduce the average points. All seven Italian clubs who qualified for Europe are still involved, six out of seven for Germany and all six French clubs. Spain, like England, has six out of an initial eight clubs left.

The further clubs get in the tournament, the better it is for that country, which is why Manchester United (and Tottenham and Villa) would benefit from Manchester City (or Arsenal) and Liverpool (or West Ham or Brighton) winning their respective tournaments.

There is also a scenario where England gets six Champions League slots – four qualify as normal, Brighton or West Ham win the Europa League (wouldn’t get an extra slot if Liverpool qualify and finish in top four), and the additional one as outlined. (There could be seven but that would require City or Arsenal winning the Champions League and then finishing sixth, which is not going to happen).

  17. How are they doing?published at 19:49 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

  18. Pre-match statspublished at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

PSV Eindhoven v Borussia Dortmund (20:00 GMT)

    • PSV and Borussia Dortmund haven’t faced in Europe since the 2002-03 Champions League first group phase – Dortmund won 3-1 at the Philips Stadion before a 1-1 draw at Signal Iduna Park.
    • This will be PSV’s first game in the knockout stages of the Champions League since 2015-16 campaign, when they were eliminated in the round of 16 against Atletico Madrid. The Dutch side’s last victory in the knockout stages of the competition came back in February 2007, beating Arsenal 1-0 at home (also in the last 16).
    • Borussia Dortmund have won their last two Champions League away games, beating Newcastle 1-0 and Milan 3-1 in the group stage. They last won three consecutive away games in the competition under the same manager in the 2013-14 season, in a run of three under Jurgen Klopp.
    • PSV are unbeaten in their last five games in the Champions League (won two, drawn three), and could equal their longest run without defeat in the competition – previously six unbeaten between October 1997 and September 1998.

Inter enter this fixture in a rich vein of form and having won all eight matches in 2024.

Recent league successes over Roma and Juventus have helped open up a nine-point advantage at the Serie A summit, but boss Simone Inzaghi does not feel that will impact their Champions League campaign.

Inzaghi’s team were runners-up to Manchester City last season and have already secured silverware this term with Super Cup success last month.

“Having this advantage doesn’t really give us an extra advantage in the Champions League,” Inzaghi said.

“We have experienced magic nights together with our supporters and we want a repeat but we know that other clubs have the same ambitions as Inter.

“I saw Atletico in the last four games and they are always strong. We will do our best.”
