Dortmund are 17 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, facing a battle to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

It is a far cry from last season, when they were one win from breaking Bayern Munich's stranglehold on the German top flight, which has lasted more than a decade.

The sense of what might have been has haunted Dortmund all season - exacerbated by Leverkusen's form. Now Dortmund are reliant on the Champions League to stop this campaign being a write-off.

While the top flight has been a disappointment for Dortmund, the Champions League has proved a saving grace for Terzic and his players - winning a tough Group F including Paris St-Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle.

This included victories in Italy and England, before holding PSG to a point to secure top spot, and a favourable last-16 draw against PSV Eindhoven. It provides hope that, amid a tough campaign for the Black and Yellows, the Champions League could yet salvage their season.

Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi has spoken of his admiration for Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone before their first meeting as coaches.

The duo shared a dressing room at Lazio and helped the Rome club win Serie A in 2000 during a trophy-laden era under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Tonight will see the pair face each other in the dugout as Inter host Atletico in the first leg of a Champions League last-16 tie at the San Siro.

“It will be a pleasure to see him again,” Inzaghi told a news conference. “He was a great team-mate. Then he went back to Spain, but we always kept in touch.

“I’ve always known he would become a great coach. He’s been 13 years with the same club and he has won a lot.

“I know how difficult it is to stay with the same club for so many years. He had great results with Atletico. He has great charisma but that’s not it, his team play great football.”

I think you have to say this tie is the match up of the round, of the last 16.

You've got Inter Milan, last season's runners-up, who are probably better now than they were when they were defeated by Manchester City in Istanbul in May. They are flying, clear at the top of Serie A, won all of their eight games in 2024. Lautaro Martinez recently became the first Inter player in over 70 years to score 20 goals in three successive seasons.

They face Atletico Madrid who although they are a little bit inconsistent on their travels in La Liga, are also freescoring themselves in the Champions League.

Both sides are undefeated in this competition so far this season, and over two legs I think we are in for a real treat.
