My dad's all-time favourite Manchester City player was Irishman Peter Doherty, who starred for the Blues in the 1930s and 1940s.

Despite trying, I was never able to convince dad that my favourite, Colin Bell, was better than Doherty. And now my son is trying hard to convince me that Kevin de Bruyne is the greatest.

This is after De Bruyne scored his 100th City goal at the weekend, making him the first midfielder to achieve that feat since Bell 53 years ago.

Who will my grandchildren be proclaiming as the greatest of all time? It could be local lad Phil Foden, whose star continues to rise. He scored a hat-trick in midweek and he is having his best season ever.

Notwithstanding their versatilities and abilities to play various positions, both Foden and De Bruyne play at their best in the number 10 role.

Although it would need a tactical shift, I would love to see Pep Guardiola play them together in the middle at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter final on Tuesday.

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

If Thomas Tuchel can use the fact that this is Bayern's last chance of silverware to motivate this group of players then all credit to him.

The consistency and rhythm and confidence and belief, that winnning feeling that you get when you are in form, that is key in big games, and pushes you through tough spells. It gives you the edge.

As a Bayern player it is the last competition they can compete for but these games are about form heading into them and the players know that.

Harry Kane scores two as Bayern Munich beat Lazio in Champions League

Harry Kane will win the European Golden Shoe this year and all this will add to the perception that, yes, he is a fantastic striker.

He breaks the record of Robert Lewandowski [41 Bundesliga goals in a single season - Kane has 32 with six games remaining] and we start talking about legendary status.

He has adapted so quickly. His four kids and wife are there, he is trying to learn German. He has jumped out of the comfort zone and into the pressure cooker and is still doing well.

If Kane had more titles he would be seen in a different way to everyone - the proof of it is the Ballon d'Or.

That shows you how popular you are and he has never finished higher than 10th. No doubt now, he is at a top club, trying to win things at a top club and is delivering.

See a lot about Bayern being under par etc. I remember Real Madrid not so long ago being "under par" but they won the CL. Those with the pedigree, do well in this competition and that's why Man City always fell short up to last season. Tough games for the English clubs tonight against the best pedigree for this competition.

    Oxford fan Rob

Nii: So we have Jorginho and Harvertz who have won the CL facing Thomas Tuchel who was their manager when they won the CL. Might be very interesting and tactical.

It is going to be an interesting night for Phil Foden now in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne. On this stage, a huge game, and if he continues in the form that he is in it could be special.

The potential for 12 against 11 tonight with the absence of Munich fans, COYG’s, get your boys over the line!

Peter: Must admit to being one of the "early sceptics" about Havertz. Happy to be proved wrong, and very happy for the player.

I think Bayern Munich midfield looks weak , COYG

Even with Kane, Bayern are there for the taking. Arsenal to take at least a two goal lead to Munich next week.

  13. Bellingham Real's main manpublished at 19:37 British Summer Time 9 April

Real Madrid v Man City (20:00 BST)

    Rob Schofield
BBC Radio 5 Live football reporter at Bernabeu Stadium

A penny for the thoughts of Jude Bellingham, wandering the Bernabeu pitch on his own an hour before kick off.

The main topic of conversation in the pre-match press conference yesterday was how Real Madrid are a different team with the England man in midfield.

He is the club’s top scorer this season with 20 goals but both Pep Guardiola and Rodri spoke at length about how he allows the 14-time Champions League winners to “control the game”.

Knowing how much of the ball City are used to, it’ll be fascinating to see how it impacts the dynamic of the first leg of this quarter final.

  14. Kane & Dier add extra edgepublished at 19:35 British Summer Time 9 April

Arsenal v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Emirates Stadium

As if Arsenal's first Champions League quarter-final in 14 years is not enough to make this a special occasion, two old north London enemies add extra spice to this big night.

Tottenham's all-time leading scorer Harry Kane is in the Bayern Munich along with another veteran of those derby clashes with Arsenal, Eric Dier.

Arsenal will be favourites as they top the Premier League and Bayern struggle in the Bundesliga - but you write off a team with their Champions League pedigree at your peril.

  16. 'Guardiola needs his side to be defensively solid'published at 19:30 British Summer Time 9 April

Real Madrid v Man City (20:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Newcastle winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Pep Guardiola knows he needs a strong defence tonight, and it is not the game to give opportunities to younger players.

Some of them are going to be top talents, but coming to a place like this, the way Real Madrid are playing at the moment, he needs his side to be a solid defensive unit.

I think he will be happy to let Madrid have the ball and if they can get a goal on the break then he will be happy with that. They have to stop Madrid scoring, which many teams find very hard.

Arsenal v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Oli Price-Bates
    The Fresh Arsenal podcast

Kai Havertz has gone from being perceived as the weak link in Arsenal's line-up by many to being the player who could make the difference for them at the critical point of the season.

The German has become Mikel Arteta's central figure in his dynamic attack.

Havertz will be an essential component if the Gunners are to get past Bayern Munich and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

His physicality, technical link-up play and experience in the competition make him a good spearhead for this team - and do not forget, he is still only 24.

The best is yet to come and, despite early scepticism, this looks like another masterstroke in the market from Edu and Arteta.

One player Real Madrid did not have at their disposal in last year's semi-final matches was England superstar Jude Bellingham.

The 20-year-old has shone this season after joining from Borussia Dortmund last summer, scoring (4) or assisting (4) in all six of his Champions League games for Real Madrid.

Manchester City will want to keep him quiet this evening.
