While this grand prix has been won from pole in eight of the 10 previous race, on the eight occasions Nico Rosberg started on pole with Lewis Hamilton right behind, the German managed to stay in front of his team-mate just twice - at Monaco and Brazil.

  4. "You can't win them all"published at 12:11 British Summer Time 10 May 2015

    David Coulthard
    BBC F1 co-commentator

"Lewis Hamilton has always been a heart on his sleeve kind of guy. He does not hide his disappointment very well. One thing I thought was telling on Saturday is he said 'you can't win them all'. He acknowledges when you have someone like Nico Rosberg, who is a quick driver, he will get poles and will get races wins."

Samuel Douglas: Hamilton to win, Vettel second, Rosberg third and the Toro Rosso's impressing.

Niyaj: Hamilton to jump Rosberg at the start, then a fight between him and Rosberg to the finish, resulting in a Hamilton win.

Jenks: I predict everything Renault powered to blow up.

"Like most teams, Williams brought an upgrade to the Spanish Grand Prix, aimed at improving 'driveability and headline downforce', according to head of performance Rob Smedley, and it has worked.

"Valtteri Bottas qualified fourth, just 0.2secs behind Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari. Beating him, though, will not be easy. Williams have had to realign their expectations this season after finding Ferrari were a long way ahead of them, and Bottas's performance was not quite enough for Smedley to reappraise where Williams are just yet.

"We have put ourselves in a favourable position with Ferrari,' he said. 'They are ahead of us in the championship and ahead in terms of pace but they are not insurmountable.'"

  11. Heat turned up on Kimi (in more ways than one!)published at 12:03 British Summer Time 10 May 2015

Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel were the only drivers to get through Q1 on hard tyres, enabling them to save a set of fresh mediums for the race.

No such joy for Vettel's Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, however, who had a bit a shocker on Saturday.

The Finn completed just one run in Q3 on fresh tyres rather than the usual two, and stated later that he had lost a set of tyres because, of all things, a burning blanket.

He said: "We had one set of new tyres we would probably have used in the last qualifying but for some freak reason it got burnt in the blankets and destroyed. It is one of those things."

It might be a tough ask for him to secure this in Spain with the two Mercedes ahead of him, but Sebastian Vettel's next race victory will tie Ayrton Senna's career total of 41.

"Can Ferrari challenge Mercedes this afternoon? It doesn't look like it on the evidence so far. The Italian cars retain their ability to make their tyres last longer than on the Mercedes, but on pure pace they have been miles off around the Circuit De Barcelona-Catalunya this weekend.

"Hard or medium tyres, low fuel or high, there has been a consistent margin of at least 0.8secs a lap between the Mercedes and Ferrari."

The 1996 Spanish Grand Prix was the scene of Michael Schumacher's first win for Ferrari. It is also a victory that is generally viewed as his finest.

It torrential conditions, Schumacher recovered from a poor start, when he dropped to seventh, to superbly navigate his way through the field and into a dominant lead, ultimately winning by 45 seconds.

"Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff was quick to play down the ramifications of Nico Rosberg beating Lewis Hamilton in qualifying. 'I know we like top talk them up and down,' Wolff said. 'Of course Lewis had quite a run, winning four races, but Nico was still in good spirits. Today he managed to extract a good lap and Lewis got in a bit of messy set-up situation or unlucky on the track with the conditions and here we go but I wouldn't interpret too much into whether somebody bounced back now or whether the dynamics changed. It's just another race.'

"Rosberg and Hamilton were singing from the same hymn sheet, with Rosberg dismissing a question about the psychological importance of his achievement by saying: 'It's just important for the race'. Let's not kid ourselves, though. Everyone knows it was important for Rosberg to lay down a marker if the championship was not going to start slipping away."
