So then, can Nico Rosberg do it? Can he take a first victory of the season or has Lewis Hamilton simply got too much over his team-mate, even from second on the grid? Can Sebastian Vettel take the fight to Mercedes from third on the grid?

"Lewis Hamilton will have an unfamiliar view at the start of the Spanish Grand Prix - there will be another car in front of him for the first time this year.

"Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg has been out-qualified and out-raced by Hamilton at every race so far this season but here in Spain the German nailed the first part of that equation.

"Can he turn pole into a race victory, for what would be his first win since Brazil last year? If Rosberg can win the start, there has to be a good chance on a track where overtaking is notoriously difficult and in a race in which the Mercedes are not expected to face any serious opposition from Ferrari."

It is another glorious day in Spain with the sun shining brightly over the Circuit de Catalunya as the drivers circulate the circuit in a selection of classic cars for the drivers' parade.

The stands look absolutely packed with just under 90 minutes until lights out.

    BBC F1 commentator

"Q2 saw a slight contrast in approach between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, with the former gunning it and putting in a comfortably fastest lap while Hamilton was wary of looking after his race starting tyres and was lapping about three quarters of a second slower.

"Both Mercedes and Vettel's Ferrari had two sets of new medium compound tyres in Q3 and as it turned out the track would be at its best at the start of the session. Hamilton crossed the line in a time 1:24.9 but moments later Rosberg went over two tenths of a second faster and snatched the advantage, setting the time that would ultimately stand for pole position."

Just as Nico Rosberg looked in danger of being swiftly routed by Lewis Hamilton, the German has potentially served up the spice the title race needs.

For the first time this season, Rosberg out qualified his Mercedes team-mate to seize pole for today's Spanish Grand Prix and boost his hopes of reining in Hamilton's early season charge.

The gap between leader Hamilton and Rosberg in the drivers' championship currently stands at 27 points. Will that be eroded by Rosberg in a few hours' time?
