  3. Raikkonen re-signspublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 8 July 2016

In case you missed it from this morning, Ferrari have re-signed Kimi Raikkonen as team-mate to Sebastian Vettel for the 2017 Formula 1 season.

The 36-year-old's future had been in doubt as the team considered whether he had done enough to earn a fourth consecutive season with the team.

They have decided that he is the best option as support to four-time world champion Vettel, who leads their team.

It will be a seventh year at Ferrari for the Finn, who won their last drivers' title in 2007.

It was arguably the most famous season in Formula 1 history, featuring thrilling racing, off-track controversies and the near-death of the sport's most famous driver, Niki Lauda, as he battled James Hunt for the world championship.

Through the long, hot summer of 1976 Hunt's attempt to claw back a huge points deficit to reigning champion Lauda was big news in Britain.

However, almost the entire season - including the British Grand Prix - was not broadcast on television in the UK because one of the cars was sponsored by a condom manufacturer.

BBC Sport tells the story of how a forward-thinking contraception company led to an F1 blackout, as the sport draped itself in cigarette advertising.

"Slow in please, slow in. Avoid changing gear," comes the message over the radio to Daniel Ricciardo.

He finishes the session second fastest, but does that suggest all is not as well as they would like?

The chequered flag falls and Lewis Hamilton finishes the day fastest of all.

Nico Rosberg, meanwhile, failed to get out in this session.

I, and Tom Cruise, approve of all this Top Gun chat. Clearly the best 80s film.

Three minutes to go in second practice, and the day is going to belong to Lewis Hamilton.

Jenson Button's finally getting more than the odd lap in now. He's on the soft compound and has the need, the need for speed.

He finally puts in a representative lap time as he crosses the line with a time of 1:33.763. That puts him P9, 0.8s down on his McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso, who is P6.

Good stat from Jennie Gow - Lewis Hamilton has always won the world championship when he's won the British Grand Prix - 2008, 2014 and 2015.

Game over if he wins this weekend, then?

"The gearbox is off Rosberg's car. It is obviously a major issue. Everyone is happy on one side of the garage and the other side looks like having a long night ahead of them."

We've been waiting for the Force Indias to do quali runs, but it turns out that they aint going to do them. Not in this session anyway, because the team just told Jennie Gow that they did their qualifying sim in FP1.
