The decision to re-sign Raikkonen was partially based on the lack of availability of top-line replacements.

The team were very interested in Red Bull drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, but both are under contract to their existing team for at least another two years.

Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz and Force India's Sergio Perez were also on their list.

However, they are also under contract to their existing teams and would have had to be bought out of those deals had Ferrari decided they wanted them.

    Breaking

Right, serious business out of the way, time to rejoice at some breaking news this morning - Kimi Raikkonen is staying at Ferrari for 2017!!

I'd imagine his celebratory expression to be not too dissimilar to this...

Reading between the lines, it is pretty clear that another crash will mean a very hefty fine for both drivers - and the possibility of a suspension from a race for whomever is considered guilty, if it’s such a situation. It adds extra piquancy to an already pretty tasty season - and a special edge to a special weekend.

Hello! Welcome along to our coverage of first practice for the British Grand Prix.

All eyes are on Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg this weekend, and not just because they are slugging it out for the world championship.

The two collided in Austria last time out - the third time the cars had hit each other in the last five races.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was positively seething after the latest incident, and has subsequently warned there will be serious consequences if there's another coming together.

The naughty step didn't work and neither did the naughty corner and now Mercedes mean business.

After their latest on-track collision, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have been given 'their final warning'.

What exactly the deterrent is remains unclear, but will it be enough to prevent them coming to blows this weekend?
