Astronaut Tim Peake returned to Earth today after six months at the International Space Startion and described his journey home as "the best ride I've been on, ever".

We're not convinced that Lewis Hamilton will be so effusive about his experience in qualifying in Baku.

However, if anyone can put a crash behind him and find a way through the field from 10th on the grid, it's the Briton.

The gap between him and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in the title battle is nine points. Can he limit the damage? Or pull off something spectacular?

Good point Marcus. The Russian qualified seventh but is promoted a place because of Sergio Perez's grid penalty.

Not so good for Kvyat's team-mate Carlos Sainz who could only manage 13th.

It's not often that drivers set exactly the same time to a thousandth of a second, as Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel did here in clocking 1.43.996.

Maybe it's a European Grand Prix thing. Remember the title-deciding final race of the season in 1997 in Jerez when the top three of Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and Heinz-Harald Frenzten all set times of 1.21.072 in qualifying?

A reminder of how it ended up with the front... it's looking good for Rosberg to disappear into the distance if he can get a decent start tomorrow.

Robbie W: If anyone can fight form down the grid for the win it's Hamilton. Something very few other drivers can do, least of all Rosberg.

Simon Olivari: If they had brought the red flags out immediately for Hamilton's crash then Rosberg couldn't set his time! Interesting delay there.

Max Verstappen is not at all happy with Williams' Valtteri Bottas after they twice nearly came together in Q3, including as they were both starting their final flying laps.

"What happened? He was destroying my lap and he was destroying his own lap," the Dutchman tells Channel 4.

"I just don't understand it."

A thrilled Sergio Perez, who qualified second but will start seventh because of his grid penalty, still says it feels like he achieved pole position.

"To be able to make the qualifying after the crash... obviously I'm still a bit angry about mistake this morning," he says.

"A mix of feelings. It was a very difficult session for me. not a lot of time after crash and to get the confidence back was great.

"The team deserve it more. Obviously with the penalty I start seventh but hopefully tomorrow we can have a strong race.

"I wasn't expecting to be as fast as this. We have to look forward for tomorrow."

Pole-sitter Nico Rosberg is understandably looking happy in the top-three press conference.

"It was great, one of the more challenging sessions out there. Everything worked out well," he says.

"All weekend we have been building towards this and qualifying was really optimum."

"They've done a great job up to now, with the track especially. It was an exciting qualifying. It's one of the easiest places to overtakes so it should be an exciting race."

A not-very-chatty Lewis Hamilton on Sky Sports: "I couldn't tell you what the possibilities are for tomorrow. It's damage limitation from here. The team made a change to something overnight but I was just not on it today."

Sho Rahman: How costly is that error from Perez in practice now? What an opportunity missed. 

John Mathew: Rosberg can position himself well for a world title with a win tomorrow after today's qualifying.

Prashant Nimat: Great drive by Perez. Performing at his level best to pay Mallya's loan. Sad that he will receive a grid penalty. 

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff tells Sky Sports: "Clearly Lewis has lost an opportunity. The car was good enough for pole position. It is tricky around here."

A superb performance from Force India's Sergio Perez, who improves on his previous best qualifying position of fourth.

What a shame that his crash at the end of FP3 - and subsequent gearbox change - means he will start seventh.

But he could be a serious roadblock for Lewis Hamilton in Sunday's race. 

Matthew: Hmm, wonder if Hamilton will "moan" about that incident

ad'n'freudian: Hamilton turns in too early. Bet the wall closed the door on him. 

Ryan Blythe: Bit of a rookie error that from Lewis. Advantage Rosberg for tomorrow.

"Without even doing a final run in qualifying the Mercedes is 0.8secs quicker than the field - how emphatic. In fact one of the best by a Mercedes all season. The good news for Hamilton is he will be in a good position to charge through the grid."

Just when all the momentum seemed to be with Lewis Hamilton, it's very much advantage Nico Rosberg as the German takes pole position with his great rival back in 10th.
