    No German driver has ever won back-to-back Grands Prix on home soil - not even the great Michael Schumacher - but Rosberg can become the first to do so with victory tomorrow.

    However, he only needs look back to the previous race that things can change in an instant.

    A frustrating day for Sebastian Vettel as once again Ferrari fail to threaten in qualifying. 

    For the second time in three races, the German could only manage the sixth quickest time, and he's clearly not happy.

    "I didn't feel that comfortable in qualifying," he says. "We're not here to start P5 or P6. We have fallen back."

    Here's a nice stat - Nico Rosberg secures pole 30 years after his dad Keke also secured pole at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.

    Daniel Ricciardo, who qualified third: "I think we got pretty close to the Mercedes. My first lap in Q3 was really good and I knew there was probably not much more. There was maybe a tenth of a second in it if there was a perfect lap.

    "We might have different tyres available for us for the race and hopefully that makes it interesting."

    Lewis Hamilton, who was short and sweet with his response in the post-qualifying news conference, said: "It has been a good weekend. I had no problems. I had the pace today just didn't finish it off. I didn't lock up.

    "It should be a good day for Mercedes tomorrow."

    Just to emphasise how impressive that lap was from Nico Rosberg, Mercedes technical boss Paddy Lowe says he was carrying more fuel than Lewis Hamilton.

    Nico Rosberg is all smiles as the top three pose for the cameras. The German then laps up the applause from his compatriots. 

    So far so good for the German. A clean sweep of practice and then keeping it together to take pole position with the one shot he had.

    Lewis Hamilton is on his lap now, but he runs wide at the first corner, and locks up a couple of corners later. It's looking like a bit of a messy lap so far...
