Valtteri Bottas goes fastest of all thanks to a 1:12.864. It's only two tenths quicker than the time Sebastian Vettel did on the slower compound of tyre.

Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, slots in P3 with a steady 1:13.046.

Romain Grosjean is moaning. In other news, water is wet.

It's a lack of grip that is frustrating the Haas driver. He's currently 18th so needs to improve before the timer hits zero.

  3. Postpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 10 June 2017

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have emerged on the track, both with ultra-softs on their Mercedes. It's the faster compound of tyre so they should nudge the Ferraris off top spot.

  4. Postpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 10 June 2017

And Sebastian Vettel is second quickest, two tenths down on his team-mate.

Fernando Alonso, on ultrasofts, goes fastest of all through the first sector before completing his lap in 1:13.974, putting him P3.

  5. Postpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 10 June 2017

Kimi Raikkonen goes fastest of all with a 1:13.548, a whole 1.2 seconds quicker than Carlos Sainz, who is on the faster tyre.

  6. Postpublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 10 June 2017

A 1:14.1 is the predicted cut off point to make it into Q2. Carlos Sainz has set the quickest time so far with a 1:14.7.

Ultra-softs are the order of the day for all of the cars out on track at the moment apart from the Ferraris, who have gone for super-softs.

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas are yet to head out.

There is no question about Kimi Raikkonen's ability. He is sensitive to getting the car and the setup he wants. The two simple things - turn the wheel and open the throttle - he definitely did Monte Carlo.

  14. Alonso is 'off the charts good'published at 17:50 British Summer Time 10 June 2017

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer in Montreal

Gil De Ferran is here, fresh from spending a month as Fernando Alonso’s mentor at the Indianapolis 500. The Brazilian, a two-time IndyCar champion and former winner of the Indy 500, guided Alonso through the intricacies of super-speedway racing as the two-time champion deeply impressed all observers on his way to qualifying fifth and contending for victory before his engine failed. How good is he, I asked De Ferran, who I’ve known for 25 years? “Oh, man,” he said. “He is off the charts good.” Could he have won had it not been for the retirement with 25 or so laps to go? “You just can't tell,” he said. “But for sure he had a good and realistic chance.”

Kudos to the fans who created the below banner in Canada, referring to Jenson Button's comment to Fernando Alonso ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix that he would pee in his seat.

Button is clearly a fan of it too..

Sebastian Vettel has to go out in qualifying and find those clear gaps he needs to improve. I thought someone would be kissing into the high 1:11s during final practice.

  19. Listen to live commentarypublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 10 June 2017

Twenty minutes to go until qualifying gets under way. There will be live audio commentary available online from 17:55 BST.

Can Max Verstappen spring a surprise in qualifying? Red Bull appear to have resolved their troubles from Friday as the Dutchman split the Mercedes in final practice with fourth fastest time. His best qualifying position in Canada is fifth, surely he can better that today?
