No-one has a better record in qualifying in Canada than Lewis Hamilton.

He is going for his sixth pole position in 10 years at the circuit. Sebastian Vettel, meanwhile, is bidding for his fourth pole position.

Fernando Alonso said after Friday practice that he wanted to qualify in the top 10 on Saturday, which he said was McLaren’s only hope of finishing in the points in the race. That’s not looking like the easiest of tasks at this stage. The Spaniard was 12th fastest in final practice but the big concern - for the race even more than qualifying - is the lack of straight-line speed. The two McLarens are at the bottom of the speed trap - 6km/h down on the next slowest car (Marcus Ericsson’s Sauber) and a whopping 15km/h down on Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari in second place. Fastest was Lance Stroll’s Williams - and that is not something you say every day - 2km/h faster than Vettel.

... in 1990, Ayrton Senna won the Canadian Grand Prix after Gerhard Berger, who crossed the line first, was given a one-minute penalty for a jumped start.

Hamilton will move level with Ayrton Senna on 65 career pole positions if he comes out on top in qualifying today.

Now then, seagulls. Yes, those fearless feathered birds played a significant role in the outcome of last year's Canadian Grand Prix, if Sebastian Vettel is to be believed.

The German claimed they forced him to lock up, allowing Lewis Hamilton to pass him and take victory. Will the wildlife have a part to play this weekend?

I am with Lewis Hamilton for qualifying. When Mercedes turn up that engine in Q3 that could be the difference. There is a quite confidence about Lewis Hamilton at the moment. Ferrari have less to turn up I think so Mercedes have the power advantage for qualifying.

Hello! Welcome along to build up to qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Sebastian Vettel was fastest in final practice, topping the timesheet ahead of Kimi Raikkonen.

Three tenths seems like quite a bit for Lewis Hamilton to make up but rarely do Mercedes show their true hand in final practice.

Qualifying is sure to be fascinating and difficult to predict.

Sebastian Vettel fastest in final practice, Lewis Hamilton three tenths off the pace.

If that is anything close to being the difference between the Ferraris and Mercedes in qualifying, then Hamilton might be hoping a couple of seagulls are feeling adventurous in Canada once again...

Advantage Ferrari at the moment. We know all too well that Mercedes have more in the tank, but do they have enough? Lewis Hamilton was three tenths of a second off Sebastian Vettel's time.

Meanwhile, have Red Bull solved their issues from yesterday? It looks like it as Max Verstappen managed to put in the fourth quickest time, 0.393s off Vettel.

Just a tenth of a second separated second from fourth, qualifying is going to be close!

We are back at 17:00 BST for build up to qualifying at 18:00. In the meantime, read Andrew Benson's final practice report here and make your qualifying predictions here.

Once again, Fernando Alonso is absolutely driving the life out of the McLaren.

He's only three tenths down on Sebastian Vettel in the first sector and a new personal best of 1:13.885 on ultra-softs moves him up to ninth.
