A few more quotes from Lewis Hamilton before we sign off.

“It is the most special thing I have, beyond all trophies and everything," he said.

“I am honoured to be honoured by that family. As I kid I thought maybe one day I can get to Formula 1 and emulate Ayrton. To equal him; I just can't believe it.”

Fernando Alonso has also got a gift today, although it's not quite in the same league as an Ayrton Senna helmet. He's got a picture of his leading laps from the Indy 500 and also gets to meet Michael Douglas. Bonus.

  8. 'I remember watching videos of Ayrton'published at 19:43 British Summer Time 10 June 2017

Lewis Hamilton has just been speaking in the post-qualifying news conference and was clearly still overwhelmed by the emotions of equaling his hero's record.

"The fact that I have now reached him in that area I can't believe it," he said.

"I remember getting home from school and putting on the video tape of Ayrton Senna and I can't believe I'm here with that many poles."

If you want insight into just how much that gift will mean to Lewis Hamilton, read his BBC Sport column about Ayrton Senna from 2014.

    Here's an excerpt:

"My family realised I was interested in his driving so they encouraged me and bought me the books that told me more about Senna the man, and into my early teens I would go and get more from the library.

"I really came to understand his character and appreciate his amazing approach to racing. I knew that he started racing when he was a boy in Brazil, and that like me he'd been helped into karting by his dad. He moved to England when he was around 20 to pursue his dream, and I was impressed by that dedication.

"But it was the fact that Senna was just an out-and-out racer that was most important to me. I can really identify with that. It's exactly how I feel I am. That's why I feel I have had that connection with him since I was a kid."

Non-Executive Chairman of Mercedes, Niki Lauda, speaking to Sky Sports: "We worked hard to not do the mistakes. Incredible laps. Unforseeable. We did not expect he could go this quick. Lewis did a fantastic job. The car was good and he was perfect.

"Qualifying is qualifying. For a good take-off it is best to start at the front, but the race will be tough."

The helmet Lewis Hamilton was presented with was Ayrton Senna's from the 1987 season.

Hamilton achieved 65 career pole positions from the 194 qualifying sessions he has entered. Senna, meanwhile, did it in 162.

With 13 grands prix to go this season, Hamilton is surely going to break Michael Schumacher's record of 68 this year.
