Lewis Hamilton has spent a career redefining the art of the possible and he chose an apposite moment for the latest example of one of his greatest skills - the breathtaking qualifying lap that did not seem possible until he did it.

His stunning pole at the Canadian Grand Prix was his 65th, equalling the number set by the late Ayrton Senna, Hamilton’s childhood hero. And it was a lap that was right up there with his very best.

“We can't always be perfect,” Hamilton said. “But today was as close as I could get.” Team-mate Valtteri Bottas - a massive 0.718 seconds adrift - summed it up best. “It was a mega lap,” the Finn said.

Hello! Welcome along to our coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix - the seventh race of the 2017 season.

Arguably, nothing less than victory will do for Hamilton, who is a full race win behind Sebastian Vettel in the drivers' championship. The Briton can simply not afford another slip up but if anyone knows how to win on this circuit it is Hamilton - he's triumphed here five times previously.

"I'm shaking. Ayrton Senna inspired me to be where I am today so to receive this is the greatest honour."

It was an emotional moment for Lewis Hamilton yesterday as he was handed one of Senna's race helmets after equaling his hero's record of 65 career pole positions.

In decades to come, there could be a Formula 1 driver reduced to tears after being handed one of Hamilton's helmets, maybe the one from this season if the Briton goes on to win a fourth world title.

To achieve that, though, he needs to overhaul Sebastian Vettel's 25-point lead in the drivers' championship and he is in the prime position to make inroads into that in Canada today...
