  2. 'We are not going to have another season like this'published at 18:41 British Summer Time 11 June 2017

    Zak BrownImage source, Getty Images

Executive Director of McLaren, Zak Brown speaking to Sky Sports: "The upgrade will come, it's just a question of when.

"It's understandable sometimes you don't hit your targets but what we will say is, 2018 is only around the corner and what we are not going to do is have another season like this one.

"Fernando can speak for himself but I think what he meant by "win by September or I'm gone", is we need to show him we are capable of winning a race by then - not actually win."

Speaking to some engineers, they have said if this was just a test day, they would give up and go home because these windy conditions would tell them absolutely nothing about the car.

Lance Stroll qualified 17th for his debut home race, and he was 0.774 seconds slower than team-mate Felipe Massa in first qualifying. After his media briefing, the 18-year-old went straight into a meeting with chief technical officer Paddy Lowe, and also in attendance was his father Lawrence Stroll, a billionaire businessman who is chucking a reputed $30m or so at Williams this year for his son’s drive.

The time for Lowe’s media briefing came and went, and with none of the Williams media people prepared to interrupt them, the journalists waiting, including this one, were left to watch the Stroll meeting through the windows of the Williams hospitality movement. Lance Stroll got up after 40 minutes, but the meeting continued between Lowe and his father. Eventually, 50 minutes after the scheduled time of Lowe’s briefing, with journalists not moving, one Williams representative plucked up the courage to go in, at which point Lowe came out, apologetic.

    What was being discussed?

“I was actually discussing with Lawrence the future and just stuff we were doing in the team, stuff for next year, that sort of thing,” Lowe said.

For half an hour with Lance there as well?

“Lance was trying to understand what my perspectives were on the weekend so far, so I was talking to him a bit about that.”

There was a lot of body language of steering wheel movements and that sort of thing

    “Oh, was there?”

Lowe went on to explain that he felt the complexity of the cars made this one of the most difficult years for a rookie to enter F1. Did he feel it was wrong for a team Williams’ stature to take a rookie?

“Maybe with the benefit of understanding it as we’re learning as we go, I have not worked with a rookie in this context before, you might be right,” Lowe said. “We might conclude that at the end of the year.”

It's a big day for the teenager, who becomes the first Canadian to race at his home grand prix since Jacques Villeneuve 11 years ago.

He's starting from 17th on the grid.

It’s a gorgeous sunny day, warm at 27C and big blue skies but there is a very strong wind. It’s shaking the media centre tent quite significantly. But more importantly - as long as the tent does not fall down - it will make things difficult for drivers.

The wind is gusting at up to 50km/h, and it is a cross-wind from the west, so blowing laterally across the cars on the entry to almost every corner. The track is quite exposed, as a low-lying man-made island in the middle of a very large river. So that’s going to make cars unstable.

Speaking of Jackies, happy birthday Sir Jackie Stewart, who is 78 years young today.

The Scot won the Canadian Grand Prix in 1971 and 1972. I couldn't find a picture of him from then so here's one of him in Montreal back in 1996 instead.
