Mercedes have been struggling for pace all weekend and were a second or so off the Ferraris in final practice.
Without his problems, Hamilton may have had the pace to be on the front row, but suspicion is that the long-wheelbase Mercedes is simply not as well suited to the tight and twisty Hungaroring as other, faster tracks.
Mercedes made progress in qualifying, and Hamilton actually set the fastest time in the second part, albeit doing two runs rather than only one like Ferrari.

All hope is not lost for Lewis Hamilton because he has won the Hungarian Grand Prix from fourth on the grid before.
That was in 2009 when he took the lead after pole-sitter Fernando Alonso's Renault made an early pit stop and dominated ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

A win for Sebastian Vettel tomorrow will be a big boost for the German while delivering a psychological blow to his rival heading into the summer break.
"We need to keep going flat out and just keep racing," says Vettel. "That's the only way to succeed. The main thing is to enjoy it."

Michael Schumacher took pole position back then ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello.
Schumacher then led home a Ferrari one-two in the race.

Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth in qualifying, speaking to Sky Sports: "It hasn't been the easiest or most straightforward weekend.
"We knew Ferrari were quick, we were aware of their pace. I think we did quite well considering. You can't overtake here, it will most likely be a train unless we do something with strategy."
Valtteri Bottas, who finished third in qualifying: "We have still got work to do but we'll see how we get on tomorrow.
"We are clearly not performing as we should, or as we want. It highlights we still have work to do with the car.
"It's going to be a long day but there's hard work to do."

"We have been pretty happy with things. I managed to improve my car for the qualifying. So far so good, but tomorrow will be a long race."
