  3. Why have Mercedes fallen back?published at 14:46 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer at Hungaroring

Mercedes have been struggling for pace all weekend and were a second or so off the Ferraris in final practice.

Without his problems, Hamilton may have had the pace to be on the front row, but suspicion is that the long-wheelbase Mercedes is simply not as well suited to the tight and twisty Hungaroring as other, faster tracks.

Mercedes made progress in qualifying, and Hamilton actually set the fastest time in the second part, albeit doing two runs rather than only one like Ferrari.

  4. He's done it before in Hungary...published at 14:42 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

All hope is not lost for Lewis Hamilton because he has won the Hungarian Grand Prix from fourth on the grid before.

That was in 2009 when he took the lead after pole-sitter Fernando Alonso's Renault made an early pit stop and dominated ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

Ferrari's rivals seem genuinely surprised by their pace in Hungary. Have they taken a significant step forward?

A win for Sebastian Vettel tomorrow will be a big boost for the German while delivering a psychological blow to his rival heading into the summer break.

"We need to keep going flat out and just keep racing," says Vettel. "That's the only way to succeed. The main thing is to enjoy it."

It's a front row lockout for Ferrari in Hungary for the first time since 2004.

Michael Schumacher took pole position back then ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello.

Schumacher then led home a Ferrari one-two in the race.

    Brilliant by Ferrari!

Wow, simply stunning as they turn things around from a mediocre Friday to lockout the front row.

Sebastian Vettel takes pole position as Kimi Raikkonen goes second quickest.

    Mercedes simply had no answer.
