  2. 'A very close battle on the cards'published at 09:43 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

Look deep enough, and Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes still looked as if they might be the quickest combination in Hungary on Friday - but you had to look pretty deep to see it. Hamilton did not get a good lap in on his qualifying simulation run on the super-soft tyre, because he was struggling for grip. And his race-simulation runs did not look great either.

But he was 0.7secs quicker than team-mate Valtteri Bottas in the first session, and on the soft tyres early in the second session, which explains why he said: “I think the car is quick enough.” Hamilton said he reckons it is going to be “very close” between the top three teams in the battle for pole. Valtteri Bottas, meanwhile, said the car was “not in the right window”.

Can Mercedes’ magic qualifying engine mode come to the rescue?

  3. Red Bull risingpublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

Hello! Welcome along to our coverage of qualifying day for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

With five pole positions and five wins on the circuit, no-one has a better handle on the Hungaroring than Lewis Hamilton.

However, it was not the Briton who dominated the headlines on Friday as instead Daniel Ricciardo finished the day fastest.

The upgraded Red Bull has done the business so far, will they keep it going and leave Hamilton waiting until after the summer break to equal Michael Schumacher's record?

It’s another beautiful day in Hungary, blue skies stretching untouched in all directions over the verdant hills that surround this picturesque track. And it looks like the competition on track could match the gloriousness of the surroundings.

There could be a three-way fight at the front this weekend - at least that is what everyone was saying after Friday practice. A Red Bull quickest in both sessions, Lewis Hamilton struggling on headline lap times on one of his favourite circuits and Ferrari in the mix.

On 15 July 2006, Michael Schumacher secured pole position for the French Grand Prix, it was to be the 68th and final pole position of his illustrious career.

Fast forward to the present day and, for the first time, Lewis Hamilton has the chance to equal Schumacher's long-standing record.

But, if Friday is anything to go by, the three-time world champion is going to have a fight on his hands in qualifying later today...
