"It was like jumping off a cave and seeing how deep you can swim. It was survival. I wanted to get the experience.

"If I don't take anything from this weekend, I can at least get the experience for when I need to stand in again."

I'm worried about the two Force Indias. Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez in 7th and 10th position. That's with quite a number of drivers still left to complete their laps.

A HUGE roar from the crowd as Max Verstappen cuts the timing beam in 1:17.028, putting the Red Bull second on the timesheet.

Jos Verstappen, in the Red Bull garage, smiles and nods in approval. Superb lap.

It was a slightly scrappy lap from the Englishman and Vettel has just streamed past him. That was an outstanding lap!

That's a stonker of a lap by Sebastian Vettel actually as he becomes the first person to dip into the 1:16s on the circuit, doing a 1:16.802. Faultless.

Peter Wanyonyi: Kevin Magnussen out in Q1. I guess Lewis Hamilton blocked him...

Alex Withington: Excellent job by McLaren on a circuit we expected would hide the deficiencies of the Honda PU. Stoffel now on Alonso's pace too.

Paul di Resta was not frightened of that Williams car. He's not driven it before but he improved.

That is actually a sensational effort. He has done himself proud.

  17. Postpublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

So, having never driven a 2017 F1 car before, Paul di Resta was just seven tenths of a second off Lance Stroll's time in the other Williams.

The Scot climbs out of the car and is given a pat on the back by the Williams mechanics. Top effort.

Paul di Resta improves! It's not enough to get through to Q2, but then no-one expected him to do that, but he's off the bottom as a 1:19.868 moves him up to 19th, ahead of Marcus Ericsson.
