We haven't seen much of the Red Bulls. Almost nothing in fact. Both Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo have done an installation lap and that's it.

Felipe Massa is another one who has been out for a solitary lap and nothing more.

Stoo G: Big reason for wet qualifying sessions not producing shocks these days is the knockout format - essentially you need shocks in all three parts to put an unlikely runner on pole

Daniel Eckersley: In the old days of the 60 min quali, you could catch a window of drier weather and steal a march, hence the mixed up grids; nowadays in 3-section quali, much harder to do

The pressure is on Ferrari to drag a decent result out of the last two races, for no other reason than to halt the negative impression of their second-half of the season so far and to give them a boost and relieve some of the tension going into the winter. But it’s not going well so far.

Sebastian Vettel, the best part of half a second slower than Mercedes on one-lap on Friday, was to the point. “Overall it is pretty straightforward,” he said. "Mercedes seems to be the quickest and then it’s very close between Red Bull and ourselves.

Kimi Raikkonen lowers the benchmark to 1:09.646 as his Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel goes second quickest, three tenths of a second slower than his team-mate.

Both Mercedes have emerged for the first time in this session and quickly slot in second and third quickest with Lewis Hamilton doing a 1:10.014 and Valtteri Bottas a 1:10.880. Both times set on softs.

The Toro Rosso statement about Renault has angered Renault, whose managing director Cyril Abiteboul stormed down to Red Bull before the session started to confront Red Bull motorsport director Helmut Marko. Abiteboul is clearly angry about the accusation that Renault might be sabotaging Toro Rosso deliberately.

The wider picture is the poisonous relationship between Red Bull and Renault as a whole. Toro Rosso are leaving for Honda next season, but Red Bull's Renault contract continues for another season. Renault do not want to supply Red Bull in 2019 but they have a contract with F1 which dictates they have to if Red Bull request it. It's a marriage of convenience and no more at the moment.

A Williams has come to a stop on the track. It's Lance Stroll's car.

"I lost power," he says. "Something happened with the gear. I have no drive at all."

Stroll stopped on an upward curve and uses it to roll slowly backwards and off the circuit.

There's plenty of cars heading out already on medium tyres. They'll want to get as much running in as possible before any more rain falls.
