Valtteri Bottas beat world champion Lewis Hamilton to pole position at the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Finn was 0.172 seconds quicker than Hamilton as the two Mercedes dominated qualifying - Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was 0.546s off the pace in third.

Bottas set the pace on the first runs, but Hamilton appeared set to displace him only to lose out in the final part of his last lap and fail to improve.

Hamilton wrapped up his fourth world drivers' title in Mexico last month. Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo pipped Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen to take fourth place.

Sunday's race is live on BBC radio 5 live sports extra with commentary at 13:00 GMT.

  3. How to beat Hamilton to the title - by the man who did last yearpublished at 14:36 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

In case you have not seen this, it is well worth a watch.

Last year's F1 champion Nico Rosberg is the only team-mate to beat Lewis Hamilton in a title battle. He tells BBC Sport what it took to get the better of his great rival.

  4. 'A struggle'published at 14:29 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

Kimi Raikkonen is fifth on the grid. Unsurprisingly, he is not too excited. He tells Sky Sports: "I had a good feeling with the car, but it was a struggle to make the tyres work.

"Too many slips and slides and I was throwing away the lap here and there."

  5. Postpublished at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

Esteban Ocon, will start ninth, but wanted to be further up the grid.

He tells Sky Sports: "It annoys me as I had the pace to go P7 for different reasons we are not there. Tomorrow I can do a good job and get the start on them."

  6. 'Valtteri had a mega lap'published at 14:22 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

Some quotes from Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who starts third.

He says: "I'm getting better, I think Valtteri always had the edge here in qualifying. It was a good session, it's a bit of a shame to be that far back but tomorrow is the race day so maybe we can get a bit closer.

"Valtteri had a mega lap, so congratulations to him. It should be a fun race, overtaking is not straightforward but not impossible here, so let's see."

  7. The bottom 10 timespublished at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

And these are the bottom 10 times. Brendon Hartley is the slowest, although with a 10-place grid penalty he was always likely to be starting at the back.

Toro Rosso have had a disastrous weekend and could still go from sixth in the constructors' at the moment down to eighth by the end of the Sunday.

  9. Hamilton 'pleased' for Bottaspublished at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

Lewis Hamilton, who starts second tomorrow, is quick to praise his team-mate Valtteri Bottas for earning his fourth pole position of the season.

"What a lap," said Hamilton. "He had an incredible qualifying session and congratulations to him. We have a great crowd here today and I gave everything. I think I lost a little bit of pace going into qualifying but Valtteri did great. I’m really pleased for him."

On running off a bit on the straights, Hamilton added: "I think I was up a little bit on turn one but then I lost it on turn five or six, otherwise it’s been an incredible year of qualifying and one I’ve really enjoyed.

"It’s great to see so many British flags here and people here today, I appreciate it."

Bottas could do with some momentum to carry over the winter. Toto Wolff said it has been a mixed year for him.

He's had some highs but also some lows. He needs to become more consistent. It would be good if he can put one over Hamilton here. If he can, he'll be happy.
