Low track and air temperatures now, which explains the lack of running.

Some journalists use the lull in activity as an opportunity to interview the drivers not taking part in the session.

Fernando Alonso is also back out.

Suddenly we've gone from a quiet drive in the countryside to the M6 at rush hour.

Brendon Hartley has also fired up the Honda engine in the Toro Rosso and joined Carlos Sainz on the track.

Hartley is nine laps away from 100 for the day.

    Happy days for Honda.

  8. Postpublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2018

Now then. No hope followed by disappointment this time as Carlos Sainz does one lap... and another... and another! He's sticking around as he improves with 1:22.168. That takes him up to sixth.

  9. Postpublished at 15:48 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2018

    Carlos Sainz you wonderful human!

The Spaniard has broken the silence and gone out in the Renault.

Just the 20 laps for Sainz so far this afternoon with his time of 1:22.621 the 10th quickest of the day.

    YES!

In fact, the whole #bbcf1 timeline is full of appropriate gifs. I need to hold some back because I'm increasingly concerned we might not see any cars for a while.

Kimi Raikkonen puts in the briefest of appearances before heading back in. Track silent again.

But then Sergey Sirotkin heads back out... but only for one lap. Track silent once again.

Can anyone provide a GIF that expresses hope quickly followed by disappointment? That's how I'm feeling right now with these fleeting appearances.

I think we can all empathise with Chris on this one!

Especially as my eyesight isn't particularly dazzling...

An orange car has made way for a red car as Fernando Alonso's McLaren comes in while Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari heads back out.

Alonso's times were not great in the ultra-softs as he failed to improve on the 1:21.327 he did on the super-softs.

Honda-powered cars managed just 425 laps across the entire eight days in testing last year. They are already on 90 on day one so well on course to surpass that total.
