Is this man going to get himself on pole later today? Valtteri Bottas started the season with two wins in the opening four races to take an early championship lead.

But he has had to watch on as Lewis Hamilton won four races in a row to take a commanding lead in the title fight. However, Bottas, who has twice finished second at Silverstone, showed he would be no pushover here, recording the fastest time of Friday’s action as he topped the second session times.

Silverstone looks on paper like a Mercedes track, and nothing that happened on Friday gave any indication that the silver cars are anything but hot favourites for the weekend.

Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton ended Friday first and second fastest overall.

Their advantage over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc over one lap was small - but it became a chasm over a race run, as Ferrari struggled with front tyre wear. Right now, it looks like an internal Mercedes battle for victory on Sunday.

    Or does it...

The leaderboard is in order of Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull.

Verstappen was a little bit too eager on that lap, as he went off wide.

London-based New Zealanders Kylie and Drew are loving their first Silverstone experience - and have more of a personal interest in what’s going on than most people here.

Seventeen-year-old New Zealand driver Liam Lawson, Kylie’s cousin, is racing in the FIA Formula 3 Championship and is a member of the Red Bull Junior Team.

“He qualified seventh and finished eighth in the race earlier - he’s very good,” said a proud Kylie, who hopes to one day be able to watch him in Formula 1.

“That’s his goal. He wants to make a career out of racing and he’s still young. It’s really cool.”

The sun’s having a lie-in today and it’s a cold, grey and breezy start to the day at Silverstone.

The wind caught a number of drivers out yesterday so will it be the same again in session three?

Lewis Hamilton delighted one of his fans after the second practice session yesterday - by signing a tattoo on her back.

Anni Reid, from Scotland, was overcome with emotion as she finally got the chance to meet her hero. She explained: “I’ve got a Lewis Hamilton tattoo of all the years of his world championships but not the last one. He just signed it so I can get the last year added as well now.

“That’s my life made. I’ve waited so long for this, 10 years for this moment. I just chanced it and asked him. I’m just so overwhelmed.”

So what of Hamilton’s chances this weekend?

“Of course he is going to win - I gave him a lucky hug,” smiled Anni.
