  4. 'Bottas should have taken the lead'published at 14:15 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

It wasn't a good start from Lewis Hamilton but he managed to keep his foot in around Turn One and kept the place. Valtteri Bottas should have taken the lead but didn't.

  6. Magnussen in the gravelpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

Magnussen's race is done inside one lap and the front left tyre has been separated from his Haas. He bounces off Alexander Albon and into the gravel. A dramatic opening lap. Penalty coming for Albon? We will see. Magnussen out.

  7. Postpublished at Lap 1/52

Carlos Sainz with a dream start - getting the jump on Lance Stroll and Lando Norris to move from seventh to fifth. The Brit has also fallen behind Daniel Ricciardo to eighth.

    Hulkenberg unable to start

Phil Dudek: Of course hoping Checo is better as soon as possible, but would be good for Hulkenburg to get his chance to race again next week.

Andrew D: Racing Point should of asked Mercedes for some help in firing up.

Mzee: Very sad for Hulkenberg, but this will only make it more dramatic if he bags that podium next week.

Formation lap time. Sadly, just the 19 cars taking part with Nico Hulkenberg out after an issue was discovered with his car.

  12. Postpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

A much more chilled build-up for Max Verstappen than last time out as he bashed into a barrier 20 minutes before the race in Hungary, busted his suspension, nose cone and front wing and then, after some Red Bull heroics - with them finishing the repairs with only 28 seconds to spare - he then was able to start and finished second.

    Nico Hulkenberg unable to start

Francesca Gunn: Poor Nico first race back and now he won’t race. Anyone think Perez sneaked in and did something to the car? Just kidding.

Jeremiah: What a shame for Hulkenberg! Can't even get the car out of the Pitlane! The one race he could have proved a point, of being on the grid

In the pre-race demonstration, after a video in which all drivers expressed support for anti-racism, Magnussen joined the previous six who had stood at the first race in not taking a knee (Giovinazzi, Sainz, Leclerc, Kvyat, Verstappen, Raikkonen).

Strategy. The teams will be aiming for a one-stop, although for some it will slip to a two, and the second-stint tyre for those starting in the top 10 will be the hard, which is the best race tyre, regardless of whether they are starting on the medium or soft.

The fact that five of the top 10 - both Mercedes drivers, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Racing Point’s Lance Stroll chose to make it through Q2 on the medium so they could have it as their start tyre the Mercedes drivers, underlines how much the teams don’t like the soft, and therefore how difficult it will be for those in the top 10 who had no choice but to have it for their start tyre.

For them - the McLarens, the Renaults and Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari - the first stint could be tricky, because degradation on the soft is high, although it should be quicker for the first five to 10 laps. Stop time is relatively short at 19 seconds or so, and there is a historic 80% chance of a safety car.
