"My guys are working as hard as they can to perfect the operation and pit stop and that is why this team is the best - they have done it many, many times but never stop training.

"Accuracy is everything and consistency is everything."

    Problems with Hulkenberg's car

Matthew Murnaghan: It will be a shame if Hulkenburg didn't start the race. A comeback for nothing!

Nulla Pax: I would so love to for Hulk to have grabbed his podium today. Next weekend perhaps?

We've just had God Save The Queen and now a lone Spitfire flies over Silverstone with the message Thank U NHS. There's also an applause for the work of the NHS and other care workers from those present at the track.

Last time out in Hungary, the anti-racism demonstration was a shambles, some not there in time, others running to frantically join it.

Now this is much better, much more unified. We are seeing a powerful video, shot in black and white, with the drivers each giving a personal message saying to end racism and inequalities.

All the drivers are wearing end racism T-shirts, while Lewis Hamilton's shirt says 'Black Lives Matter'. Some of the drivers 'take the knee' and seven of them remaining standing.

  5. 'They are all having chat'published at 13:52 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

    Jack Nicholls
BBC Radio 5 Live F1 commentator

(Speaking about the lack of media and personalities on the grid in the build up to the race)

The grid sort of looks boring now. Everyone is just standing around. Lando Norris, George Russell, Alex Albon and Max Verstappen are all just having a chat on the grid.

Remember, this is how they were meant to start. The bottom seven may have one less car in front of them now with that Hulkenberg news.

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

This is one of the best circuits out there, fast corners, redesigned in 2010 - they added a new loop which helps overtaking as well.

Tricky corners, big braking zones. You have that blend with some really fast, brave corners and then of course those famous, iconic names - Copse, Maggots, Becketts.

Racing Point really need to retire that hashtag.

  11. Postpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

That's big news from Racing Point. What a disaster for them and for Nico Hulkenberg who has done so well as a last-minute substitute in place of Sergio Perez. As soon as we know what's happening, you will know.

I've spoken to the team and they are saying for some reason Hulkenberg's car won't start. Pitlane is now closed so they have a bit of a problem on their hands.

Jolyon adds: "Appears to be a problem on the front end but the mechanics don't appear to be in a crazy rush."

  20. All aboard the Ferrari trainpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at Silverstone

    Charles LeclercImage source, EPA

Those who watched in the late 1990s and early 2000s will recall a phenomenon known as the “Trulli train”, whereby Italian Jarno’s race pace was with some regularity not a match for his qualifying speed and he ended up with a queue of cars behind him. Well, today there may well be a “Ferrari train”.

Charles Leclerc excelled in putting the Ferrari fourth on the grid - and in getting through second qualifying on the medium tyre, like the Mercedes and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen - but to do so with their lack of engine power the team have trimmed the downforce as far as they dare. This has worked over one lap, but Leclerc has admitted they have been struggling on long runs.

“On race pace we are struggling,” he said. “We have the pace but we are destroying the tyres very quickly compared to the other so starting on the medium will help us massively.” Sebastian Vettel starts 10th after a difficult weekend and a lot of lost track time. He’s hoping for a better race, admitting: “It can’t get much worse.” Except, he’s starting on the unfancied soft tyre. So he is without doubt in for a difficult afternoon.
