  5. 'Car not where we want it to be'published at 15:23 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

Max Verstappen starts in fifth for tomorrow's race, was it a good session for Red Bull? "Not this weekend," the Dutchman tells Sky Sports. "We have been struggling all weekend."

"I tried everything but the lap time was the same. The car is not where we want it to be - the balance and grip in general.

"There are a lot of things we have to work on. We just didn’t do a good job.

"We can still get a podium. Monza is a special track but we struggle here."

After that rapid final lap from Hamilton to pip Bottas and Sainz's impressive drive into third, I'd briefly forgotten about the Ferrari situation.

Both cars outside the top 10! Vettel out in Q1. Madness.

Josh Earl: Hamilton delivers once again!!

Chris Clee: If Bottas doesn't try into Turn 1 tomorrow, there will be no point watching the rest of the season. God I miss Rosberg. He wouldn't be afraid to stack it in pursuit of a title.

Nathan Marzan: Can the Mercs lap the whole field tomorrow?

  11. 'Trying to find the right balance'published at 15:12 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

Lewis Hamilton, who secured his seventh Monza pole: "It’s not too bad. Fantastic performance from the team.

"It was not the easiest, you’ve seen how close it was between us and it really demanded a clean lap.

"Valtteri was strong and kept pushing. I was a bit nervous going through the final sector.

"In the years I’ve been coming here, I’ve had times where we had less downforce and grip. The speed through the Lesmos was awesome. It’s trying to find the right balance, which is not so easy."

  12. 'Still all to play for'published at 15:09 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

Mercedes Valtteri Bottas after securing second on the grid: "It was really close, as I was expecting. In the end I was on my own which is not too bad a place to be but you don't get any gains in a straight line.

"My long run pace compared to Lewis is good. It is going to be a good race tomorrow. It is still all to play for."

  13. 'I had to go for it'published at 15:09 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

McLaren's Carlos Sainz, who qualified in third place: "I've been feeling strong in qualifying and put in a strong lap.

"The last lap I nearly messed up in Lesmo 1. I'm shaking a bit because at Ascari I had to just go for it.

"I felt like I was nailing Q1 and Q2 and then in Q3, run one, I was a bit nervy. I needed a strong final corner. I risked the lot and went for it. Into Ascari I was like 'whoa, that was a bit late.'

"The Renaults I thought would be quicker but this is great."

Francesca Gunn: Even without party mode still nearly a second from 3rd inwards. So Mercedes dominance is just so great!

Bruce Ha: I just hope Sainz can pick up the podium, he deserves that bit of luck.

Mark Eden: Sainz needs to enjoy these moments before he gets in his Ferrari!

If Lewis Hamilton turns this pole into a win tomorrow he will just be one race victory behind Michael Schumacher's all-time record of 91.

There was just a tenth between Hamilton and Bottas in the end.

We're told that lap from Lewis Hamilton was the fastest lap in F1 history.
