B Lee: Can't the FIA and stewards come out before qualifying and set a minimum lap time for out laps? This nonsense is getting dangerous, it makes the sport look ridiculous and puts people in danger. Just give a 5 place penalty for anyone who breaches it.

F1 slipstreams. Surely an answer is to send the drivers out at say 30s intervals for 1 lap each (plus warm-up lap). If they screw up that lap, tough. They could draw lots for the order in each session

Qualifying will begin in around 20 minutes time.

This was the top 10 in third practice to give you a rough sense of who is looking good and who is not.

Just time before qualifying to look back on this abomination of a pizza Sergio Perez wolfed down before last year's Italian Grand Prix.

Tuna and chips on a big load of dough.

    The food of champions.

If you followed final practice live, you may have heard Charles Leclerc complain about the minimum lap time imposed by the FIA, saying it was fine on an out lap, but dangerous on a “charge lap” - ie, a slowdown lap between one flying lap and the next, when the hybrid system is recharged (and tyres cooled and so on). At the time, there was some confusion as to exactly what he was getting at.

Ferrari say Leclerc was referring to the fact that the imposed time - to avoid drivers going too slowly - is a good thing when drivers are together on an out lap, but if they are on a charge lap between one quick lap and the next it is difficult to follow who around them they need to let pass while looking at the dashboard at the same time to follow the delta time.

Ferrari say this problem will solve itself for qualifying - presumably because the drivers will only be doing one flying lap and then returning to the pits, rather than an extended run.

  9. Remembering Jochen Rindtpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Jochen Rindt's death at Monza.

Rindt is Formula 1's only posthumous world champion after the Lotus driver was killed in practice for the Italian Grand Prix in 1970.

The Austrian made his debut at his home grand prix in 1964 and recorded six wins and 13 podium appearances during his short career.

It's a big couple of weeks on the horizon for Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari's backyard.

The six-time world champion is closing in on Michael Schumacher's all-time record of 91 wins in Formula 1.

Pick up a sixth victory of the season this weekend and that's win number 90 in the bank.

Cross the line in front again a week later at the Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello, and Schumacher's winning record will be matched...at Ferrari's 1000th race in Formula 1.

Kimi Raikkonen knows Monza like the back of his hand, surely?

Alfa Romeo also assumed this when they asked the Iceman to name three corners at the legendary Italian circuit.

He rattled them off no problem.

    Erm...not quite.

    We still love you, Kimi.

The F1 graphic designers have been working overtime it seems for the race at Monza.

We have already seen Lando Norris’ pizza-inspired lid, George Russell’s Italian flag motif and Antonio Giovinazzi love letter to his home country.

    Next up…Sebastian Vettel.

The four-time world champion is modelling this bobby dazzler for his last Italian Grand Prix driving for Ferrari.

Vettel says the helmet is a thank you to the Scuderia and the passion of the tifosi.

I think we may have a winner for best design of the weekend.

  17. Bottas sets the pacepublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 5 September 2020

An unusual final practice session has set the stage for an intriguing qualifying session at the Italian Grand Prix.

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas set the pace, ahead of the McLarens of Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris, with Daniel Ricciardo’s Renault fourth from Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

But it was a messy session as drivers sought slipstreams from rivals, a situation that is likely to dominate qualifying from 14:00 BST.

A tow is a huge influence on lap time - as much as 0.7 seconds if a driver positions his car perfectly behind another car - so teams will consider it vital to get one, especially when field is so tightly packed behind the Mercedes.

And there is jeopardy involved - not only in terms of the final seconds of qualifying, as was demonstrated last year, when several drivers failed to get around in time to complete their final laps.

There is also the danger aspect of some drivers being on flying laps when others are driving slowly trying to achieve the optimum position.

There was a stark example of this at the end of final practice, when Hamilton had to take last-minute avoiding action as he closed on Haas’ Romain Grosjean with a massive disparity in pace.

For Renault, it will be a hectic time ahead of qualifying, after Ricciardo stopped out on track towards the end of the session.

The Australian appears to have the pace to challenge for a spot on the second row, perhaps even to beat Verstappen to third, but Renault have to diagnose what appears as if it might have been an engine problem - and then fix it.

There were long faces among Renault bosses as they discussed the matter in the immediate aftermath of practice.

If he requires a fresh engine, then Ricciardo faces a grid penalty, as he has already used up his allocation of engines for the season.

Philip West: This situation into the Parabolica is absolutely absurd. Are the drivers too unintelligent to work out what constitutes a dangerous situation? Yes, getting a tow is crucial at Monza, but use your head and apply some sense.

Alex Withington: Surely the solution to the backing up issue is to set a minimum time per sector in qualifying.
