Lewis Hamilton took the 92nd pole position of his career and makes his 150th front-row start, having won three of the five races so far this season.

So it seemed slightly incongruous to hear him say his expectations were for the race to be “really hard”.

The world champion said he believed Max Verstappen’s Red Bull was “a little bit quicker than than us in race trim”.

But to beat the Mercedes, Verstappen has to get ahead of them, and overtaking is notoriously difficult in Barcelona. One pit stop or two? Mercedes are definitely concerned about their tyre usage after the events of Silverstone.

There’s a lot to play for over nearly 200 miles this afternoon.

  4. Another dominant day for Mercedes?published at 12:29 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

"They're always trying to slow us down"

That's what Lewis Hamilton said of plans to stop high-power modes in qualifying. Based on yesterday's evidence, they need to tie a boulder to each car to really slow Mercedes down.

Once again they were in a league of their own as Lewis Hamilton secured pole position ahead of Valtteri Bottas.

Will they complete their dominance of the weekend today? Or could someone else have a surprise up their sleeve?
