    Valtteri Bottas is going backwards!

Great starts from Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll as well, the latter making a bold move on the inside and he's up to third.

Lewis Hamilton leads from Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll. Bottas down to fourth.

It is right between a one and a two-stop rate. The Mercedes, that much harder on their tyres are probably locked into a two-stopper. Max Verstappen and the Red Bulls may be able to do something else...

The formation lap is under way.

Not long now for lights out. I'm excited for that run down to the first corner.

It is not that hot out there. It is 30 degrees, but we had hotter at Silverstone last week and it is not the longest Grand Prix. We should be done in an hour and a half.

Tyre covers off and Sebastian Vettel has opted to start on mediums, as has Daniel Ricciardo, who starts from 13th,

The top 10 are all on used softs so should expect to see their first stops around the 16 lap mark.

Sebastian Vettel's one plus point of qualifying outside the top 10 is that he will have a free choice of tyres for the start.

Interesting to hear Nico Rosberg used to have a box of potatoes to nibble from shortly before races got under way.

As he rightly points out, fluid intake will be the most important thing today with temperatures very, very high.

National anthems time now in Barcelona. The circuit staff have laid out a snazzy big sticker with some of the drivers' faces on for the drivers themselves to stand on.

Looks good, lots of effort for something that will be shifted in a couple of minutes, though.

Jeremiah: There is this fear Mercedes are trying to portray, that Max Verstappen will be winning the race. The Mercs will actually have a strategy into the race. I see 1-2 for them to the dash to turn 1 and a 1-2 podium for them. Advantage being on Lewis Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is pretty hot, even just standing here. We have more clouds than yesterday but I don't think it will make a difference.

"Today is going to be so tough. The Red Bulls were quicker than us in practice on long runs. I love that we have that challenge and I am excited.

"Turn One it is generally over from then on. It is long way down so it is going to be a serious challenge. I hope this is a day we get a good start."

  20. One stop or two?published at 13:37 British Summer Time 16 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Strategy-wise, tyre degradation has been relatively high this weekend, and this will push the teams in the top 10, who all have to start on the soft tyre, towards a two-stop. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t try to make it on one. Doing so will depend on extending the first stint towards the end of the pit-stop window, which is something like laps 15 to 25.

The hard tyre is not a great race tyre because of its lack of pace. But clearly it’s more attractive on a one-stop, although some may well try to make it on a soft-medium strategy. As ever, the key is to find a slot to drop into after a stop to be able to run at your pace, and not be held up behind a slower car on old mediums.

The two Mercedes and Max Verstappen both have two new sets of mediums and one hard to choose from. Most of the rest of the top 10 have only one new set of each, although Pierre Gasly has two mediums, and Carlos Sainz only one new medium and one used hard. Will teams go soft-medium-soft, or soft-medium-medium? This could be, one team principal said, an interesting race with lots of different strategies. Safety car chance is low, a pit stop costs 21-22 seconds. Overtaking is hard.
