It seems the main contenders on the soft tyres here so we should be able to get a proper comparison of their pace.

Nine cars are on track. George Russell is among those biding their time in the garage.

Yuki Tsunoda is getting the reputation as the shouty sweary man - which is really that good four races into your Formula 1 career. We all know he is promising, but we're not talking about Formula 2 champion coming into F1 here, he's got a lot to prove and he can't just start demanding things immediately, he's got to work hard for it and be patient.

Maybe that great debut he had in Bahrain set his expectations a bit too high for how things should be. He needs to take a step back and keep a calmer head.

Have we bigged up the Hamilton v Verstappen battle too much? Or are they just biding their time?

  11. 'So tight'published at 14:34 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

It's so unbelievably tight. If Yuki Tsunoda found three tenths, he would've gone from 16th to knocking on the door of the top five here. Super close but... fine margins, and we're going to see that all the way through this qualifying session. Tiny errors make a huge difference.

  12. Postpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

At the top is was Lando Norris who stole the show with a 1:17.821.

Bottas was second, Leclerc third and Verstappen fourth. Hamilton ended down in ninth.

Can Norris repeat that in Q3?

Yuki Tusnoda has not got the most out of that but he's ended the session three and a half tenths away from team-mate Pierre Gasly... who is in third. Bonkers!

    Over to Lando Norris now...

Raikkonen can only manage 15th. I don't think that'll be enough.
