  1. 'Ricciardo trying to find his feet'published at 11:32 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

    Jennie Gow
BBC Radio 5 live pit-lane reporter

Just looking at Daniel Ricciardo. He's had a bit of a rough ride on some of those sausage kerbs.

He's done the most laps of anyone at the moment (10), currently on the medium tyre, but he was just talking to his race engineer, who very politely said 'it might be interesting to try some more front wing you know? Why don't you box this lap?'

So he's obviously trying to find his feet there and still struggling a bit there.

So then. Here's our first clue of things to come. Bottas goes quickest by a fair distance on the softs.

Verstappen follows him and is only 0.207 seconds back on the mediums. Those mediums are supposed to be slightly slower.

Next comes Hamilton... He beats both to go top but is only 0.3 seconds clear of Verstappen. Make of that what you will.

I'm sure now everyone will keep their set of hard tyres for the grand prix tomorrow, so we're heading towards a soft qualifying, with the caveat of what do the big teams use for Q2? Can they get through on the medium tyres?

  6. Postpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

Out comes Lewis Hamilton for the first time on some very shiny looking softs. He'd be able to see himself in those.

Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas is also on the softs while Max Verstappen has emerged fitted with a set of mediums.

  7. 'Beware of the exit kerb'published at 11:23 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Drivers will have to watch out for the Turn Seven exit kerb, which is really the apex of Turn Eight. It was a problem for Sebastian Vettel yesterday and Max Verstappen, twice.

But, the exit of Turn Nine as well was an issue for Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari and Antonio Giovinazzi in the Alfa Romeo.

  8. Postpublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

Charles Leclerc is the first to nudge into the one minute 18s. He's on the soft tyres whereas Sergio Perez's time earlier was on the mediums.

Antonio Giovinazzi, also on the softs, is currently second.

JJ Jackson: The calendar shake ups do shine a spotlight on some of the absurdities of a typical year. Never understood going to Canada in June in middle of European season... surely makes sense to do American continents at once. Baku to Turkey much more sense, geographically.

As we reported yesterday, next month's Turkish Grand Prix is under threat after the UK government put Turkey on its red travel list.

The race was added to the calendar last month after travel restrictions forced the cancellation of the Canadian GP.

UK transport secretary Grant Schapps said on Friday that red-list countries "should not be visited except in the most extreme circumstances".

F1 said it was "assessing the situation and will provide more details in the coming days".

The race is scheduled to take place between 11 and 13 June.

Red Bull's first effort is 1:20.388. Lewis Hamilton's 1:18.170 was the fastest time yesterday.

There are a fair few revving engines now. Raikkonen and Giovinazzi are two of the latest to emerge.

Here comes Sergio Perez in his Red Bull. He was only 10th fastest in FP2 yesterday. There's work for him to do.

  13. 'Big day for Alonso'published at 11:12 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

It's a big day for Fernando Alonso. There has been a little bit of criticism towards him for his qualifying performances - of course he has been out of Formula 1 for a couple of years. But it's not very Alonso-like to be drilled in qualifying by a younger team-mate.

This time he hasn't looked quite on top of it, although he had a brilliant race in Portimao to recover. But clearly, still waiting to find some information out on a Saturday morning.

  14. Postpublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 8 May 2021

Alonso is still strolling around on his own on track. His first effort is a slowish 1:21.020.

There's little action elsewhere. Carlos Sainz is at least at in his Ferrari.

Most people are watching the Red Bulls today to see how close they get to Mercedes. Max Verstappen's error cost him a quick time yesterday.

The Dutchman is currently stood in the garage listening to something through his earphones. Guesses welcome on what that is.

Cars are emerging onto the track.
