It has been an inevitability that Verstappen and Hamilton would come together this season.

Verstappen has been taking the risks and Hamilton, the elder statesman, the one with the seven titles, has maybe had a little bit more maturity in the battle, has back out in certain times.

But... he can't afford to keep backing out because Verstappen will keep picking up points here and there.

Andrew Priestley: If that was a conscious decision from the Mercedes pit wall to keep Lewis Hamilton out under the Safety Car with front wing damage, pre-empting the red flag, that’s superb race management. Keeping track position with the ability to repair the damage before the restart.

Manette: Max absolutely turns in on Lewis. Lewis clearly had the better start, was even had coming out of Farm. Definitely a racing incident or if anything, Max’s fault.

Andy K: Hamilton needed to do something this weekend to close the gap on Verstappen..and he's done just that. Wonder at what cost though.

The big question is going to be how much damage has Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes going to have. He and Verstappen have won eight of the nine races we've had this season. Are both going to be out after three laps?

Verstappen definitely is, Hamilton we wait and see.

  9. Postpublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

With the red flag, the cars are back in the pits, meaning Mercedes have valuable minutes to try to fix Hamilton's car after that first lap incident.

We said the British GP was one of the highlights of the season and wow, what a start we've had today.

Seeing that incident again, Verstappen and Hamilton touch, it spins Verstappen and he slides at speed backwards into the barrier.

Thankfully, Verstappen is out of the car on his feet and seemingly OK.
