We're hearing Max Verstappen is still having a medical check. He walked away from the car after going into the barrier at a frightening pace.

  3. Five second penalty?published at 15:40 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

I see the penalty for Hamilton - if he gets one - of more than five seconds, based on what we have seen the last few years.

Red Bull can't be chuffed with that because Hamilton is still favourite to win the race, with a five second penalty.

Unless they are going to give him a stop-go or drive through penalty and exclude him from the race, then all the arguments for and against are going to be fairly irrelevant really.

Alex Withington: Just spoke to Nige and he says it's a racing incident. Nige is our neighbour, by the way.

J Jones: I wonder if Toto Wolff still signed off his email to Michael Masi with “kind regards”?

Amit Mandalia: I know the award is for ‘Driver of the Day’ but can we get some kind of award for Michael Masi today for the brilliant sass to Toto???

  6. Guilty of causing a collision?published at 15:37 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at Silverstone

Objectively, Christian Horner is wrong to say Hamilton was "never anywhere near alongside". He clearly was. That doesn't necessarily mean, however, that the stewards will not find him guilty of causing a collision.

James Beswick: Small point, but what a clever decision it was for Hamilton *NOT* to pit under the safety car when he would've been forced to the back of the grid. Predicting a red flag?

Adam Kitchiner: From some angles, looked like Hamilton straightened up to force Verstappen off.

Joe Baker: Racing incident for me, no fingers should be pointed (can already see people blaming Hamilton) Both drivers pushing hard at high speed with inches between them, always a risk things like this happen. Don't always have to apportion blame.

Toto Wolff has just come back down from seeing the stewards and he is striding into the pit lane.

    That will be interesting...

  11. 'The hardest championship'published at 15:32 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

This is the hardest championship Lewis Hamilton has had to fight - probably since 2007 or 2008.

This one? It's maybe even harder than those two for Lewis.

Red Bull, with Max Verstappen, who is serious talent, are taking the fight to Mercedes.

    Wolff: "Michael, this is Toto..."

    Masi: "Yes Toto, go on..."

Wolff: "Michael we have sent you an email with the diagrams where the cars should be. Did you receive them?"

Masi: "Toto, I don't access my emails during the race so I can concentrate on the race."

Wolff: "Well, you should look at this because there is something with the rules coming up."

Masi: "OK Toto, feel free to go upstairs and see the stewards directly."

  14. A good day for Ferrari so farpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

While the Hamilton-Verstappen fall out is obviously dominating the story, Ferrari had snuck themselves into the lead with Charles Leclerc moving up from fourth to first.

Ferrari have not won an F1 race since September 2019 when Sebastian Vettel triumphed at the Singapore Grand Prix.

When we restart, it's with a Ferrari man in the front.

Kris Jefferson: Hamilton gave Verstappen room earlier in the lap and avoided contact, Verstappen didn’t and paid for it

Nathan Marzan: Its 50/50 whether Hamilton should get a Penalty. But no mention at all of Verstappen's driving up until that point which was questionable at best.

  16. Postpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

Michael Masi is getting it from all angles. Now we've got Mercedes boss Toto Wolff at him, telling him Mercedes' side of the story.

The stewards are going to be very, very busy. It could decide the winner of this race, later on.

This is an afternoon to get very, very comfortable. We're going to be here for a long time.

We're meant to get racing again in 15 minutes and we've got 52 laps, but only three done so far.

  17. 'That's just dirty driving'published at 15:25 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

Some more from Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who is furious at that incident which has left Max Verstappen out of the race.

He tells Channel 4 that Hamilton was "completely out of order to stick a wheel up the inside".

He adds: "Everyone who's driven that corner knows you don't stick a wheel up the inside at Copse. He's put him in the fence. Thank god he's not been hurt. It was a desperate move.

"You do not stick a wheel up at Copse, one of the fastest corners in the world. That's just dirty driving.

"It's now with stewards and we hope they deal with it appropriately."

  18. Team by team (still under red flags)published at 15:23 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

    Ferrari: 1. Leclerc, 8. Sainz.

    Mercedes: 2. Hamilton, 3. Bottas.

    McLaren: 4. Norris, 5. Ricciardo.

Aston Martin: 6. Vettel, 11 Stroll.

    Alpine: 7. Alonso, 10. Ocon.

Alfa Romeo: 9. Raikkonen, 13. Giovinazzi.

Alpha Tauri: 12. Gasly, 15. Tsunoda.

    Williams: 14. Russell, 17. Tsunoda.

    Haas: 16. Schumacher, 18. Mazepin.

Red Bull: 19. Perez, Out. Verstappen.

Red Bull are 44 points clear at the top of the constructors' championship, hard to see how it could get any worse for them.

  19. FIA radio - Horner to race director Michael Masipublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

Horner: "Michael, have you got a minute?"

    Masi: "Yes"

Horner: Look Michael, that corner, he was never anywhere near alongside.

"Every driver who has driven at this circuit knows that you do not stick a wheel up the inside of Copse. That's an enormous accident - and it was 100% Max's corner.

"As far as I'm concerned, full blame is on Hamilton - who should never have been in that position. Thank god he has walked away unscathed. I hope you are going to deal with this appropriately."

Masi: Understood Christian, that's why it's under investigation by the stewards."

  20. Postpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 18 July 2021

Hamilton blaming Verstappen and now we're hearing some very, very strong words from Red Bull team boss Christian Horner blaming Hamilton for the incident.
