Red Bull's Max Verstappen held off a late challenge from Ferrari's Carlos Sainz to win the Canadian Grand Prix.

The two started the final 15 laps nose to tail after a late safety car but, despite heavy pressure from Sainz, Verstappen held on with older tyres.

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell took third and fourth for Mercedes as Ferrari's Charles Leclerc recovered to fifth from the back of the grid.

Verstappen extended his championship lead over Leclerc to 49 points.

Red Bull's Sergio Perez remains in second place despite retiring from the race with an engine problem but is only three points ahead of Leclerc.

Fernando Alonso, who starred in wet qualifying to start on the front row for the first time in 10 years, suffered from a questionable strategy from Alpine and some technical issues to finish seventh, behind team-mate Esteban Ocon.

Charles Leclerc, who started in 19th place due to an engine penalty and finished in P5: "It was frustrating day, actually. The last part was nice, but the very first part I was stuck in a DRS train and then in the middle of the race, I was stuck behind Esteban [Ocon] as he was a much fresher tyres. It was just about being patience and thinking about the end of the race."

  8. 'A bit of consistency is coming, finally'published at 21:36 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

Lewis Hamilton in the paddock: "A big shout out to my team back home. The women and men back at the factory, working hard week in week out. It's difficult to be working, working, working and not seeing progress.

"Qualifying yesterday was emotional for me and Angela, we were like wow this is beautiful for us. We've been working so hard and to have a strong race today gives me so much hope and confidence that we can move forwards.

"There is potential in this car, its not where we want it to be. It has a small work window, that's a hard thing to navigate through.

"P3 is different to a win but I think it feels like that. A bit of consistency is coming, finally. I know we can do better, I know I can do more, just need to keep working"

  11. 'I had engine problems' - Alonsopublished at 21:30 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

Fernando Alonso, who started the race P2 but finished P7: "With the safety car, we were unlucky. When we decided to box it was just before the safety car ended so we stayed out. Ten seconds more it was enough to make the stop.

"The biggest problem was in lap 20, I had engine problems, with the battery system, I was losing eight tenths."

"It was a very difficult race and the engine problems on my car is very frustrating. The positive is the car was very fast. Without engine problems we would be P3 in front of Lewis."

  12. '31 pit-stops'published at 21:27 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff on Sky Sports: "Lewis and George were both very good. We showed some pace today. We ran different drag levels. In terms of performance in the race, we were quick.

"The way forward I think we just need to develop the car in a different window than we had. We didn't get it right in many areas but we own the problem.

"I think before you start on next season, you need to see what the problem is.

"Within the team, Lewis was always positive with the mindset. How the two work together is really astonishing. in briefings they always ask questions to each other. Its super how the two have progressed."

Christian Horner on Sky Sports: "Max just couldn't break DRS and the Ferrari was quick on the straight line today. Not a single mistake. We lost communication with the car, we could hear him, he couldn't hear us. I guess he didn't need to hear us.

"All credit to Carlos today he pushed Max really hard. We stopped in the first VSC, we felt it was the best route to the end of the race, then the next VSC came and Carlos got a free stop as well.

"We're taking each race at a time, Max is in the form of his life. disappointed we didn't have Checo today."

  17. 'Sainz should take confidence from that'published at 21:17 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Jack Aitken
Williams reserve driver on BBC Radio 5 Live in Montreal

I think Carlos Sainz's performance was fantastic although I do believe the Red Bull was the stronger car this weekend.

He fought back from a quiet race in the first half and took his opportunity, and came so, so close.

I really think it was a great performance and he should take confidence from that.

Lewis Hamilton is addressing the crowd.

"How are you going Montreal?" he asks before the crowd respond with huge cheers.

Hamilton adds: "We have had such an awesome crowd here this weekend. It's quite overwhelming honestly to get this third place and it has been such a battle this year with the car and as a team.

"We have continued to stay vigilant and focused and never giving up. That's something I am so proud about and I'm inspired by my crew. So thank you to everyone that is here and back in the factory.

"They are a little bit too quick for us at the moment but we are getting closer. We have got to keep pushing and hopefully we will be in a fight with these guys."
