Valtteri Bottas is just not a great racer, wheel to wheel. So often he is just not aggressive. In a car that was so quick yesterday he is now just looking to pick up a couple of points.
Lap 43/71
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are in agreement that the hard tyres are not doing it for them. But Pete Bonnington tells Hamilton that they have seen some drop off on the medium tyres as well.

Ron: Think Mercedes have got this strategy very wrong
Steve: Don’t suppose there’s any rain on the horizon?
Mike Searle: Surely Mercedes pitted Hamilton at the time they did as they assumed that Red Bull would pit again? I think their strategy falls apart when they realised that this isn't the case

He is marching away, Max Verstappen. Sergio Perez is stuck behind Lewis Hamilton. Sure he would have some more pace if he didn't have Hamilton ahead. George Russell does not have any pace here in the other Mercedes. He is going no quicker than he was on the mediums.
Lap 41/71
Mercedes may be having a rethink about the hard tyres but Fernando Alonso doesn't care. The Spaniard is into the pits for the hardest rubber available. Alonso is back out in eighth.

Hamilton: "The tyre is not as good, I think."
Mercedes: "Copy that. We did see some drop off at the end of life."
Lap 39/71
Lewis Hamilton's struggles are playing into the hands of race leader Max Verstappen. The Dutchman continues to edge further away from the Silver Arrow and now the gap between the pair is over eight seconds.

Lewis Hamilton is dropping away - eight seconds from Verstappen. He is not very quick on this hard tyre. He is struggling to find some pace right now.
Lap 38/71
Lewis Hamilton knows what's up. The hard tyres are not performing as well as the medium compounds.
McLaren: Vettel is still out on soft, we are considering plan C. Any thoughts?
Ricciardo: Yes, happy.
Lap 37/71
Will this strategy work out for George Russell? He's eight seconds behind the Red Bull of Sergio Perez, while the Mexican is hunting down the other Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.
Soft stint wear life was of no concern at all.

I don't understand that one from Mercedes. That feels like no-man's land [for George Russell]. What are they trying to get out of that stint? I think Russell was calling his own strategy quite well from the cockpit. I don't understand the logic for Mercedes to pit Russell.
Lap 36/71
So, the two Red Bulls are on the mediums, while the Mercedes pair are on the hard rubber. Quickest man on track continues to be home driver Sergio Perez.

quixoticgeek: Well that's one way for Merc to split the strategies. Will it work?
Stephen Levett: I am not so sure I will stay awake long enough to see the end of this race. This is a bit of a yawnfest this evening
