Perhaps the biggest roar of the day. a monster birdie putt from Phil Mickelson. A huge, huge roar and that is what this Masters needed. We need the big stars on the leaderboard to get the crowd out there.

There have been less carefully plotted space missions. Phil Mickelson, sends his 40-foot birdie putt at 10, off on a course 10 foot higher than the hole and then watches as it gradually obeys the laws of gravity, homing in before dropping with its last ounce of momentum.

Lefty is now on two over.

Louis Oosthuizen drops his tee-shot within 15 feet on the par-three 16th, but then his ball slopes off like a skulking schoolboy with a free period and a nicotine habit. It is 25 feet or so to the hole by the time the brakes are fully applied.

Bill Haas comes from a pedigree line of Masters competitors so it is perhaps no surprise he is leading at Augusta.

The 31-year-old, the son of former PGA Tour player Jay Haas, shot 68 and leads defending champion Adam Scott by one late on day one.

"My great uncle, my dad's uncle, Bob Goalby, won the Masters in 1968, and I think it's been a special place in our family since then," he said. "Obviously my dad, I think he played I asked him last night, he said he played 22 times here.

"We came most of the years. I remember like it was yesterday, he said it was 20 years ago he finished third and it does not seem that long ago. I remember a lot of the shots he hit coming down the stretch.

"My uncle Jerry, his brother, has competed in a couple Masters; and my uncle Dillard Pruitt, I'm almost positive he played one Masters, maybe two. That's my mom's brother. It's something I think we are very proud of to have that many members of our family be able to tee it up here at Augusta."

Rory McIlroy was satisfied with his day's work after carding a one-under 71 around an Augusta course he called one of the hardest Thursday set-ups he has known.

"It was a good day at the office," he said. "They set the course up very difficult . Some of the pin positions were tough to get close to. For the most part I felt like I put my ball in the positions I wanted to be in.

"The greens are firming up, the wind was all over the place and anything under par today is a good score."

Ian Poulter talking to BBC Radio 5 Live after his four-over-par round of 76:

"When I missed greens I hit pretty good recovery shots. I am a little bit frustrated. The course was receptive, It was fairly soft but the greens always run very very fast. The pin locations made it very hard to keep it under the hole and it is very easy to get out of position. You will see guys three-putting.

"The plan tomorrow is play golf and don't make as many mistakes. If I do that I will be fine, I am playing good enough but my scores are not reflecting that. I need to stay focused."

Louis Oostihuizen is two over through 13 and is one of the few still out there who can rearrange the top of the leaderboard. For the foreseeable anyway.
