England's 19-year-old amateur Matthew Fitzpatrick gave himself "six or seven" out of 10 after shooting a four-over 76 on his Masters debut.

Sheffield's Fitzpatrick, who qualified as US amateur champion, was playing with defending champion Adam Scott and Jason Dufner and said of Scott: "He seemed to have it on a piece of string. That's what I felt like, anyway. Maybe a couple of loose shots, but other than that it was great to watch. So it was really cool and and such a great guy, fantastic player."

He added: "If you would have said to me [last year] my soccer team would get to the semi-final of the FA Cup and I'd play at Augusta, I'd just never, ever believe you in a million years."

Sheffield United play Hull City at Wembley in the last four of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Dustin Johnson duffs his third into the water at 15 after laying up a little to close to the drink. After lengthy discussion with an official he avoids the sort of bother Tiger Woods got into at the same hole last year, walks back along the line and hits a fine fifth to within ten feet.

Sheffield amateur Matthew Fitzpatrick talking to Sky Sports after a four-over par 76:

"It was good fun, slightly disappointing not to have a better score, but it is not easy out there. Hopefully it will be a bit easier tomorrow and I can make some shots up.

"It is a lot different to practice. The greens are firmer and faster, You have to keep going and do your best."

Scotland's Stephen Gallacher talking to Sky Sports after a one-under par 71:

"I only hit one poor drive, on 10, I was happy to get under par and stay in the red. I played with Sandy Lyle, Jose Olazabal and Miguel Angle Jimenez in practice. Their advice was great, you don't go for flags you go for positions. It is a special course, it is Augusta."

2012 winner Bubba Watson is safe and secure for his par at 14. 'Bubba golf', the central philosophy of which seems to be do what you feel not what you are told, is well suited to Augusta, where you can over-think.

Phil Mickelson salvages a par on 11 with a gutsy putt from 10 feet or so. That was travelling. He is two over, but there are signs of life in his game that belie that ordinary score.

Phil Mickelson is up against it on 11. It has been duffing up the world's best all day with the wind in the course's, rather than the players', favour. His second is still a long way short of the par-four's green.

Sang-Moon Bae is left hanging as his chip on 15 takes a long hard look at the hole, before finally deciding to drop to give the South Korean an eagle. He moves onto one under.

He is joined there by Lee Westwood who measures his birdie putt just right on the 10th. Steady, solid, we'll take that Lee.
