  1. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

That has been a long time brewing! Ian Poulter pumps the air with both fists, bulges his eyeballs and roars to the heavens. His chip from just short of the greenside bunker and a good 50 yards from the pin has disappeared down the drain for an improbable birdie.

Extraordinary and probably the moment of the day so far...

  2. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Jimmy Walker's second shot is a good un, right up into business area of the green. Rickie Fowler's is 24-carat gold though, zooming in on the flag and halting within five feet...

  3. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 12:24 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Rory McIlroy has marmalised his drive on 15, the Scottish air ripped in two by his ball as it soars out towards the horizon.

Ian Poulter is a good 20 yards back from that and his approach is snared by a greenside bunker. He was a lion in Medinah. He has been a pussycat around Gleneagles so far.

Europe's Justin Rose, after he and Henrik Stenson beat Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar 3&2: "We were up against two great players and they played really well. But I really read the greens well today and had that anticipation - when you see the ball going into the hole you get those positive vibes and today everything just went right for me."

Steve in Belfast: World rankings and form don't matter nor does age it comes down to who copes better with the unique atmosphere of the Ryder Cup. That is why this will go down to the wire: it is compelling viewing.

David from Aldershot: Meant to be focusing on my son's taekwondo grading but am gripped by live Ryder Cup updates!!! Go team Europe!!!

Tom in Manchester: One of those lovely USA jumpers will set you back a mere $174!

Think we'll save the money for fixing that shank then...

  8. Bjorn & Kaymer v Reed & Spiethpublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Apparently Patrick Reed's college golf team found him a difficult, almost impossible, guy to play with, despite his obvious talent.

Well, Jordan Spieth seems to be enjoying the ride. The American rookies make it two points from two as Thomas Bjorn's little wedge from off the green slides by to bring the match to a close.

Only one match left out on the course with Europe 6-5 up in the clubhouse.

    Chief sports writer at Gleneagles

"Rose might be blooming, but Ian Poulter is wilting badly, and that spells trouble for his partner Rory McIlroy. While Jimmy Walker is now starting to match the fizz and pop of Rickie Fowler, McIlroy has the weight of the pairing on his shoulders. And, as they turn to head for home, that is taking this critical match across the Atlantic."

  10. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    Bernard Gallacher
Three-time European Ryder Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

Ian Poulter really needs to help out McIlroy, take the strain off him. He just can't buy a putt. Medinah he was holing them regularly.

  11. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Rory McIlroy is still doing all the donkey work in his pairing, with Ian Poulter on cheerleading duties as he sprays left and right.

McIlroy's putt on 14 is matched by Rickie Fowler as they trudge onto 15 with a hole to make up.

Jonathan Clark:, external Poulter has got to come to the party now. He looks like a rookie, not a legend.

Lee Sebire:, external Is Bjorn actually playing this morning ?? Heard his name once.....on the first tee

Not the finest morning for Europe it must be said, despite the heroics of Rose and Stenson.

    Rob Hodgetts
    BBC Sport at Gleneagles

"Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson set a new Ryder Cup record of 12 under for a fourball match in their thrilling win over Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar. The 21 under collective score for both sides - another record - shows the Americans were in similarly scintillating form.

"The electricity started sparking at the eighth green as Rose made a birdie to get back to level after trailing by two after six. The charge quickly built and spread among the swelling gallery as birdie after birdie dropped from the putters of both sides.

"When Stenson's curling 20-footer took the Europeans ahead for the first time on the 12th, the roar thundered around the glens and the Swede pumped his fist like a pneumatic drill. Rose, quickly becoming Europe's new Ryder Cup talisman, added another on 13 and sealed an absorbing match on 16."

  14. Westwood & Donaldson v Furyk & Mahanpublished at 12:07 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    Andrew Magee
American PGA Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

The way these US two have putted this afternoon, it's been an exhibition. If one has missed the other's been there. Hunter's been the main man today. I'd keep him out on the course this afternoon and maybe pair him with someone with a little more firepower.

  15. Donaldson & Westwood v Furyk & Mahanpublished at 12:07 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    USA up

Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan, balls within a toothpick's length on the 15th green, have a pair of four-foot putts to win the match. Furyk snatches at his, sending it past. But the deal is signed, sealed and delivered by his playing partner.

Westwood and Donaldson routed, but they were up against two players who dovetailed perfectly.

  16. Bjorn & Kaymer v Reed & Spiethpublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    USA up

U.S. Ryder Cup player Patrick ReedImage source, Reuters

Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer slip deeper into the mire as Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth move four up with four to play.

With the United States ahead in the final three matches, we are heading for a 6-6 scoreline at the end of the morning session.

  17. McIlroy & Poulter v Walker & Fowlerpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    USA up

That is the good news for Europe.

Behind the top pair though, things don't look so clever. With Donaldson and Westwood and Bjorn and Kaymer well down, Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter also slip below the rising tide of red.

Jimmy Walker's long, meandering putt on 13 finally finds its way home and, with Rory McIlroy having squirted past and Poulter bang out of form, that is the Americans ahead for the first time in the last match.

  18. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kucharpublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

    Europe up

Bubba Watson needs a miracle, but the two-time Masters champion's bag is empty. His chip stays up and the day's first point folds Europe's way.

Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose, in particular, have been titans.

You've got to put your best players out on the course this afternoon, whether they've played all the time or not. It's going to be tight. I'd put Rose and Stenson together again. You don't get tired when you're winning.

  20. Rose & Stenson v Watson & Kucharpublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 27 September 2014

Justin Rose's Midas touch continues. The Englishman clips close on 16 and will have a little nudge for his birdie.
