    Rose (+2)

    Justin RoseImage source, .

Justin Rose could not get the putter flying yesterday, averaging 1.94 putts per hole, an increase from 1.67 the day before.

At two over he is still in with a cracking chance if he can get things going.

He is in the heart of the green and has a long birdie putt on the first.

    Angel CabreraImage source, .

Here is Angel Cabrera, a Masters winner and capable of magic around here. All good magicians practice though and he is doing just that on the range.

You can watch others putting the work in by clicking 'live coverage' at the top of this page.

Cabrera is out in 30 mins or so and on two over, will know a good round puts him in with a Sunday chance.

  3. Some par Adam...published at 17:10 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Scott (+4 after 6)

Adam Scott perhaps gives us a preview of what's to come on the sixth as his tee shot is well short of the green. He won't be the last to do that today for sure. You guys, if you're reading, you need to get some extra timber out of the bag on that hole.

Scotty chases a chip up to within two feet and laps up the applause with a smile. It's a cracking par save to stay at four over. So far it's par-par-par-par-par-par.

  4. Bogey for Poulterpublished at 17:07 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Poulter (+4 after 1)

Sadly Ian Poulter three putted from 20ft on the first and a bogey takes him back to four over. A crackerjack 320-yard drive on two though should give him a look at birdie.

Too much to do now though? Or will Rory, Spieth and the popular kids find their struggles out here too?

    Rose (+2)

Only two players are under par on the course as we speak. Just what Justin Rose wants to be hearing as he saunters down to the first tee.

  6. That's betterpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Stenson (+5 after 3)

Hats off to Stenson. He responds from that woeful third hole to pump a tee shot within 12ft on four....

  7. Stenson's nightmarepublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Stenson (+5 after 3), Mahan (+7 after 3)

The sun is out, it looks a picture but it's ugly out there for sure. As I've said, the odd stroke getting picked up but the wind is audible and there are putts going astray everywhere.

What must our late starters be thinking? Hunter Mahan marks his ball as it looks like it may blow away and then he downs it for double bogey on four.

Henrik Stenson looks like he may eat his golf bag right now as he has just putted from on the green to well off it. What happened next? Double bogey that's what.

  8. Watch the action nowpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

A little click on 'live coverage' at the top of this page and you can now watch Adam Scott/Charley Hoffman, Amen Corner and action from the range.

Sounds like a good move to me.

    Hoffman (+6 after 4)

"Trust it and hit it," says Charley Hoffman's caddie on five. Hoffman may be low on trust after dropping two shots early on today. This finds the green but it's a long way away from the hole.

I'm a bit concerned as Billy Horschel is due on the tee in five minutes and goodness only knows what he'll have on.

    Poulter (+3), Kuchar (+3 after 5)

Ian Poulter is out there now and drives his opener 250yds before pumping an iron to within 20ft of the pin. Solid stuff.

Matt Kuchar holes from just off the green on five to move one under for the day and three over for the tournament.

No one is making a surge just yet, a shot here, a shot there but nothing glued together.

    Spieth (-4), McIlroy (-3)

Rory McIlroy and Jordan SpiethImage source, .

Rory McIlroy could become the sixth man to win all four majors but tonight that achievement will probably go under the radar, it's all going to be about the McIlroy v Spieth war.

"When I'm out there on the course, I just have to be completely 100% focused on the task at hand," said McIlroy.

"If I can stay in the moment and be completely focused over every golf shot I hit from now until Sunday night, then hopefully everything will work out the way I want it to."

Spieth said: "I don't think either one of us is focused on each other. I think we're focused on the golf course."

  14. Whoops, no birdie for Hunter...published at 16:41 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Mahan (+5 after 2)

Stand down, Hunter Mahan blocked his birdie putt from four feet on two. Par only.

  15. Birdie for Mahan?published at 16:40 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Hoffman (+6 after 3), Mahan (+4 after 2)

Hunter Mahan has his eagle attempt on two, it's long, long, long but uphill which can make these more manageable. Nice work Hunter, a tap-in birdie left to wipe out that shot you dropped on one.

Charlie Hoffman has had a nightmare start with two bogeys in the first three holes and now he finds the galleries on four. He looks disgusted, hopefully no one is hurt.

Steve, you have made a monster error there. I mean, you had last night to get such items out of the way. Such a move would have won you brownie points and then tonight you could have cashed them in for free time watching the drama.

Still, have a great time. And many happy returns to your wife.

    Mize (+3 after 4), Mahan (+5 after 1)

There are some birdies out there it seems, Larry Mize found three in the opening three holes before giving one back on four, he began the day five over. The 57-year-old of course won this tournament in 1987.

If one of our big names can muster a start like that we'll all be jumping at the ceiling.

Over on the second Hunter Mahan sets up an outside chance for Eagle but he will be putting from Alaska, across several states, and back into Georgia.

  18. Poulter primed...published at 16:30 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Poulter (+3)

Ian Poulter is due out in 10 minutes. I'm not sure where I stand on athletes tweeting moments before battle. Should their mind not be in destroying the field or getting every ounce out of themselves rather than 140-character messages?

    Mahan (+5 after 1), Stenson (+3 after 1)

Tea Olive - the rather cute name given to this grizzly opening hole - takes a shot from Hunter Mahan who slips to five over. Henrik Stenson has around 7ft to save par and stay at three over. Here it comes, never off line and that's a good start.

Birdie this first hole today and you've made a big stride on the field.
