You know what, Zach Johnson actually went through the green at the 10th and his dink back has left a very tricky par-saver. Rickie Fowler, in the same group, is in deeper trouble after a flop out of the bunker. Expect shots to go there.

  3. Spieth leads at three underpublished at 17:09

Only three men have defended the Green Jacket - and what a trio they are. Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods. Jordan Spieth, looking to become the fourth, is making a lightning start, becoming the first man to reach three under this week. Birdie at eight. Ominously good.

You don't often think of Augusta being hilly, but the undulations are part of its challenge. Zach Johnson, on the rolling 10th fairway, makes the green in two. Bryson DeChambeau has parred the eighth and, believe it or not, Victor Dubuisson is in water again.

  6. Berger shares the leadpublished at 17:04

What do you know about 23-year-old American Daniel Berger? He's a new co-leader after birdieing both three and four. The world number 53 is making his first appearance at Augusta. Seriously, where do America find all these golfers?

Johanna Mackin: Rickie looks wonderful! The whole ensemble is reminiscent of an early 90's computer game antihero.

Spieth at the par-five eighth, his third shot getting close enough for a decent chance of a third birdie and the outright lead. Wiesberger at the par-three 12th is over the water on to the green. Relief.

  9. Z Johnson bogeys ninepublished at 16:58

Zach Johnson slips from the summit, a fiendish slider on the ninth skidding by on the left of the hole. It leaves Spieth and Casey at two under. Victor Dubuisson, by the way, has ended up with a double bogey at 12. Ugly.

Rickie Fowler's shoes causing come debate at #bbcgolf. I might also be getting some grief for mocking them. I'm all for progress - if a sport needs to remove the rod from its behind, it's golf. I just think those particular wheels happen to be horrendous, like he's borrowed them from the Fresh Prince. Fowler pars nine and is level at the turn.

Famous sports stars from Costa Rica? Hmmm. We're haven't got much further than Paulo Wanchope. Maybe Paul Chaplet can change all that over the next decade or so.

Any nerves about playing the Masters aged 16? Nah.

"I'm feeling good. I have nothing to lose, really," shrugged Chaplet, who will be in the company of 1998 Masters champion Mark O'Meara and Swede David Lingmerth for the opening two rounds.

"I'm pretty happy about where I'm at right now game wise and mental wise.

"So I'm just really looking forward to playing with Mark and David and having a great time."

  12. He's just 16...published at 16:51

What if you could start playing golf and be at the Masters in less than six years?

That's what 16-year-old Paul Chaplet has achieved and he starts this week as the youngest player in the field.

The teen won the Latin America amateur title in February, external and tweeted the simple message above after guaranteeing his spot for Augusta.

When I was 16, I was causing mischief by stealing bottles of milk from outside my neighbours' houses. Paul Chaplet is playing the Masters. I think I know who's winning. He's just stepped up to the first tee and becomes the second-youngest player in the tournament's history. Precocious.

They're starting to work through Amen Corner and Amen Corner is starting to work through the field. Victor Dubuisson, full-time golfer and part-time musketeer, has got wet at the 12th. He was at one under, but the par three is going to do some damage to that.

  15. Casey takes a share of the leadpublished at 16:47

It's very early for us to be talking about the 20 years since Nick Faldo won the Masters, but there is an Englishman at the top of the first-day leaderboard. Paul Casey birdies seven to join Spieth and Johnson at two under.

  17. Wiesberger drops a shotpublished at 16:42

Ah, a blemish for Wiesberger. The Austrian, who has had at least a share of the lead since he went through seven, has bogeyed the par-four 10th. He's back to one under. Not a good way to enter Amen Corner.

Really, James? How has Rickie Fowler got these past the Augusta staff? And I'm not sure they've ever had a snake here, have they? I'm struggling to think of a more outrageously dressed sportsman. He slides a monster just past the hole at eight, remaining level par.
