We mentioned Dustin Johnson and three-putting earlier in relation to the final hole last year.

Well, the American was able to find the 609-yard par five fourth in two but then, you guessed it, three-putted.

He's level par playing the fifth.

  2. Fitzpatrick falls backpublished at 15:29

It was looking good for 21-year-old Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick when he stood on the 15th tee at level par but three bogeys in a row meant he finished with a three-over 73.

Still, that doesn't mean you're out of it in this tournament.

Compatriot Luke Donald, who came through qualifying, started a six-over 76.

  3. Birdies for Scott & Elspublished at 15:25

Adam Scott birdies the second to go one under while Ernie Els - who won his first major at this course 22 years ago - sinks a putt on the third to reach the same score.

  5. Schedule revised - againpublished at 15:19

A change to the planned schedule as the USGA has announced that the afternoon wave of players - who were due to tee off from 00.15 BST (19:15 local time) - will now start their second round on Saturday.

The morning wave will now start their second rounds at 19:30 BST instead of 18:45.

  6. Birdies for McDowell & Mickelsonpublished at 15:13

Graeme McDowell sinks his birdie putt at the third and moves to one under, while Phil Mickelson repairs the damage of his opening bogey by sending his second shot at his second hole (the 11th) right at the flag. It's a tap-in birdie for Phil.

  7. Willett & sonpublished at 15:10

Masters champion Danny Willett may have started with a five-over 75 but his mood has no doubt been improved by seeing his baby son Zachariah...

  8. Bogey for Day at the firstpublished at 15:06

Jason Day misses his par putt and is one over after his opening hole.

A brilliant start for American Scott Piercy who has birdied three, four and five to join Lee Westwood in joint second on three under.

  9. Postpublished at 15:03

Jason Day is struggling on the first: After finding the rough with his tee shot, he's wasn't able to control his second which found a greenside bunker.

The Australian has chipped out to about 10 feet, which he'll need to hole for an opening par.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell, the 2010 champion, is level through two and has six feel left for a birdie on three after a superb second.

  10. Bogey for Mickelson to startpublished at 14:58

Phil Mickelson's radar is awry on the first, starting with his tee shot, and he opens with a bogey on the 10th - his first - after missing a six-foot par putt.

World number one Jason Day has just started his round.

  12. Mickelson & Rose tee offpublished at 14:44

One of the 'marquee' groups (how did that word get into the sporting lexicon?) has just teed off at their first - the 10th hole.

Six-time runner-up Phil Mickelson, who was 46 yesterday, is aiming to claim the only major title to elude him.

England's Justin Rose, the 2013 US Open champion, is alongside the American while Swedish world number seven Henrik Stenson completes the group.

They should attract a decent gallery.

  13. Johnson looking to banish memories of Chambers Baypublished at 14:41

    Dustin JohnsonImage source, AP

Remember Dustin Johnson's three-putt from 15 feet at the final hole of last year's US Open at Chambers Bay which meant he missed out on a play-off by one shot?

Well the American, still seeking his first major, is under way alongside Spain's Sergio Garcia.

Johnson has parred the first two holes but Garcia has just bogeyed the second.

  14. Knox finishes level parpublished at 14:35

Scotland's Russell Knox, ranked 25 in the world, has started with a level par round of 70.

A fine start for the 30-year-old, who failed to make the cut at the 2014 and 2015 US PGA Championships, the 2015 Open and this year's Masters.

  15. 'Hard finding any kind of rhythm'published at 14:30

More from a subdued Rory McIlroy, who tells Sky Sports he is heading for the practice range after coming home in 40 for an opening-round of 77.

"I felt like it was hard getting into any kind of rhythm," he said.

"I am missing shots left, I am missing shots right. I need to go to the range this afternoon and work on a few things if I'm going to be here for the weekend.

"I am just not in a good place with my swing."

  16. 68 for Lowry, 72 for Spiethpublished at 14:24

    Jordan SpiethImage source, Getty Images

Defending champion Jordan Spieth is in with a 72 to stand two over. He'll have hoped for better but that's more than acceptable at a US Open.

Open champion Zach Johnson bogeys his final hole but is one shot better than Spieth after a 71.

Ireland's Shane Lowry pars 18 to finish with a 68 and sits third at two under. Excellent start from someone who always seems to be in the upper reaches of the leaderboard.

  17. I've been struggling with my swing - McIlroypublished at 14:18

Rory McIlroy's 77 equals his worst opening round at a US Open and the world nuumber three admits he has been struggling since his practice rounds.

"You're not really in control of what you're doing. It was compounded by the stop and start. I just really struggled," he says.

"The key thing is not to get too down on myself. I'm just trying to stay as positive as I can.

"Honestly, I've been struggling with my swing, even in the practice round."

  18. McIlroy starts with a 77published at 14:12

Rory McIlroy isn't able to salvage a par on 18 and he starts with a seven-over 77.

That's a desperate start for the Northern Irishman who dropped four shots in the six holes he played today.

Playing partner and Masters champion Danny Willett finishes five over; alongside them American Rickie Fowler completes his round at six over.

You wouldn't have thought that trio would combine for a total of 18 over between them.

  19. Could Oakmont suit Bubba?published at 14:07

I remarked earlier that US Open courses shouldn't suit Bubba Watson, who is tied fourth after an opening one-under 69.

His past record backs that up, but Oakmont gave him his best result in this championship nine years ago...

  20. Birdie for Lowrypublished at 14:03

Ireland's Shane Lowry made two excellent par puts on 15 and 16 and has just birdied 17 to go two under, in third place on his own.

Rory McIlroy has got work to do to avoid another bogey on 18 - he is in the rough to the right of the green in two.

The Northern Irishman is six over.
