  1. Eagle for Stensonpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

He has been patient, waiting for his chance and then a moment of magic from Henrik Stenson, who claims an eagle at the 615-yard par five fourth to jump to two under and tied fourth.

We don't see many eagles at a US Open. Top work, Henrik, top work.

Ross McCarthy: Sergio, Dustin Johnson & Westwood all in the top 10. They have a combined 26 top 5 finishes in majors without a win.

I'm sure they will be delighted you reminding them that Ross.

Johnson looks in trouble, having left a 10 foot putt for a par at the 16th, but no slip ups this time. The ball vanishes into the middle of the hole and he stays three under, one stroke off the lead.

Sergio Garcia, having three-putted the 15th, only needs one attempt on the 16th and that par keeps him in tied sixth on one under.

Dustin Johnson is on the edge of the 16th green and needs something special if he is going to birdie it from here.

He has a share of the lead if he gets it, but he completely misjudges the speed from all of 65 feet and is well short.

This course was under water yesterday, but now the skies are blues and the course is getting firmer and faster.

On the 10th green, we have six mowers doing their work and we will soon be having some golfers beginning their second round.

It is a bit later than planned, but it will enable the tournament organisers to breathe a bit easier at least.

  6. Pain for Spainpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

While Johnson is going one way on the scoreboard, Sergio Garcia is going the other. The Spaniard misses a four-foot putt at the 15th.

He three-putts the hole and that sees him come up with a bogey to leave him now on one under.

  7. Birdie for challenger Johnsonpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Dustin Johnson finished tied second in the US Open last year - after three-putting the last to lose it - and he is again making a big impact on the scoreboard.

A birdie at the 14th takes him on to three under, level with England's Lee Westwood and one behind leader Andrew Landry.

Johnson has a chance to claim a share of the lead on the 15th but a long-range effort, accompanied by a few 'get in the hole' shouts, falls well short.

Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Dustin Johnson are currently in the top 10.

Can one of them win a Major for the first time or will their putting let them down as it has done in the past?

One place you don't won't to be at Oakmont is in the infamous 'Church Pews' on the third.

Measuring 100 yards in length, it is a bunker that has a dozen strips of unruly grass running horizontally across the hazard.

It is something Justin Rose has just got acquainted with. He can then only find the long rough, left and short of the green. Not a hole he will look back on with too much relish. How much damage will it cause the Englishman's round?

A birdie for Adam Scott on the 11th. That is his second of the day and the Australian, who bogeyed the eighth, takes residence inside the top 10.

But American Scott Piercy, who 20 minutes ago held a share of the lead, has just dropped a shot for the second consecutive hole with a bogey at 16th.

  12. Frustrating Day continuespublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Some days you just stand, looking on in frustration wondering what is going wrong. That must be how Jason Day is feeling.

The Australian is in the deep rough to the left of the hole on the 11th. One shot later, he is still in the rough to the left of the hole on the 11th. That is another shot dropped for the world number one, who is at five over and tumbling down the leaderboard at pace.

Angel Cabrera is the last man to win the US Open at Oakmont. That was nine years ago and are we going to see a repeat this week?

Well, he taps in from close range to birdie the 11th. That is good enough to put him on to one under and back into the top 10.

  14. Latest scorespublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Here's how it stands at the top:

    -4: Andrew Landry (18),

    -3: Lee Westwood (18), Scott Piercy (15)

-2: Shane Lowry (18), Sergio Garcia (13), Dustin Johnson (13)

    -1: Scottie Scheffler - a (18), Bubba Watson (18), Kevin Streelman (18), Danny Lee (18), Gary Stal (14*), Angel Cabrera (11)

  15. Postpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Scott Piercy was a joint leader. Not any more. A bogey at the 519-yard par-four 15th sees him drop down to three under.

Clubhouse leader Andrew Landry can just sit and watch with a big smile on his face. His only shot today was a putt to make a birdie on the ninth, his last hole. Now that is what you call a good day's work.

His four-under-par 66 is proving tough to catch. It should be. It's the lowest first-round score ever recorded at Oakmont in a US Open and this is the ninth time the Pennsylvania course has hosted the tournament.

  16. Bad news for Mickelson, wasted opportunities for Johnson and Garciapublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Phil Mickelson plays a shotImage source, Reuters

Mickelson went over the green with his second shot on the second and that hurts him, as he drops back to level par.

Dustin Johnson is so, so close and leaves the ball hanging over the hole on the 13th. That would have been a birdie on the par-three hole and would have taken him up to joint third.

Seconds later, Sergio Garcia, in the same three ball as Johnson, watches helpless as his putt also agonisingly drifts wide by the shortest of margins. He too misses a chance to move to three under.

  17. Postpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

You will be an extremely brave man or woman to bet on Gary Stal for the title.

A safer bet would be Sergio Garcia, who is in tied fourth and with a chance of a birdie from 15 feet on the par-three 13th. It will be his third birdie in four holes if he is successful.

We have not mentioned Frenchman Gary Stal much, but he finds himself inside the top 10 at the moment.

Starting at the 10th, he began well with birdies at the 11th and 12th, but immediately dropped a shot at the next.

But he returned to two under with a birdie at the 16th, before falling back to one under with a bogey at the first. He has five holes left to play today and it is certainly a day to remember for a player ranked 211th in the world.

  19. Ernie, Ernie, Ernie...published at 17:34 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

All the good work of the opening seven holes undone in a flash. A missed putt from six feet on the ninth leads to a bogey and then worse follows on the 10th. A drive into a fairway bunker, a hack out, a short-iron onto the green, three putts for a double-bogey six. Ernie Els back to one over.

  20. Postpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

Sergio Garcia was in the sand, but it looks like it won't be a costly error. A good up and down follows and that should be enough to save par on the 12th.
