  1. Day on the greenpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Day -1 (9)

Jason Day makes the 10th green in regulation and is left with around a 16/17-foot putt for a birdie.

We've seen him make those, but not this time. Should be a solid par for the Australian, though.

  2. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 17:07 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -4 (9)

Well, that "good miss" is followed by a bad miss.

Tasked with what looked like a straightforward par putt for the world number four, he kisses the cup and drops a shot.

That bogey will slightly take the gloss off what looked like being a strong opening nine for McIlroy.

  3. Rough timepublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Spieth +3 (11)

Jordan Spieth is finding a lot of rough today and he fires a drive into the long stuff again on the 12th.

The two-time major champion needs something special to make the cut.

  4. McIlroy's 'good miss'published at 17:04 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -5 (8)

Rory McIlroy is nestled right on the edge of the rough. He looks to chase the pin with his second shot at the ninth and is comfortably on the green.

He misses the birdie putt, though, but Jay Townsend on BBC Radio 5 live calls it a "good miss". He should make par...

Matsuyama, playing into the breeze, looks to dink it on from the side of the green and does so superbly - he pars.

  5. Day into top 30published at 16:56 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Day -1 (9)

Jason Day makes par on the ninth, sending him through the front nine at three under today.

He's up into the top 30.

  6. Willett wobblespublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Willett +3 (8)

Danny Willett has fallen foul of the Postage Stamp.

The Masters champion is now in serious danger of missing the cut with a double bogey on the eighth to leave him at three-over.

The projected cut is currently two-over.

  7. Brilliant Bubbapublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -5 Watson +1 Matsuyama +2 (8)

Bubba Watson found the bunker on the other side of the Postage Stamp to Rory McIlroy. He flops out, making it look simple, almost into the cup - he has to settle for par, but it was nearly a fantastic birdie.

McIlroy follows suit from the 'coffin' bunker, going within touching distance of the flag. No dropped shot for the Northern Irishman.

Hideki Matsuyama was the only one the group to not find the sand, but he bogeys.

    Ben Dirs
    BBC Sport at Royal Troon

"Rory in the left-hand greenside bunker, Bubba's in the bunker out right, Matsuyama has gone over the back. Fun and games at 8. By the way, Rory took six to get out of a bunker on this hole in Tuesday practice...

  9. McIlroy up to fifthpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -5 (7)

That birdie on the seventh has lifted McIlroy up to tied fifth.

It's an almost identical start to yesterday's round, when he made four birdies on the front nine.

He's got three so far this afternoon through seven, but has just found the sand off the tee at the Postage Stamp...

  10. Birdie!published at 16:37 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -5 Watson +1 (7)

Rory McIlroy at the short par-four seventh, takes his putter out and rolls it up on to the green.

It looks like a little left to right to putt for birdie down the hill, but McIlroy is not convinced. He wanders round the green and has a chat with Bubba Watson, whose marker appears to be putting him off.

After all that, up he steps and down it goes - birdie.

    Watson, meanwhile, makes par.

  11. A big back nine for Spiethpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Spieth +3, Rose +1, Lowry +5 (all nine)

Jordan Spieth reaches the turn in 39.

A disappointing round so far from the American with two bogeys and a double bogey.

All to do on the back nine to make the cut.

Justin Rose makes the turn in 40 and the Englishman has work to do on one-over.

Shane Lowry has two shots back on his overnight score to bring him to five-under, but as it stands he will not make the cut. He needs something special in the back nine.

  12. Time running out for Stensonpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Henrik Stenson says time is running out in his bid to become the first male Swedish player to win a major.

Stenson, who turned 40 in April, is one shot behind clubhouse leader Phil Mickelson after shooting a second-round 65.

"I haven't been in contention for the last six majors and it was a big, big goal of mine to try and be up there and give myself a chance. So far, so good," said Stenson.

"I just wanted to turn things around because I'm not going to play these tournaments forever and ever. I don't have another 50 goes at them. It might be a dozen or 15 in total."

  13. Day in the redpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Fowler -4, Willett +1, Day -1 (all seven)

To the group that contains the world number one and the Masters champion.

Rickie Fowler picks up a birdie on the seventh to move to four-under.

Danny Willett get his first birdie of the day to one-over and boost his hopes of making the cut.

While Jason Day makes his third birdie in a row to go to three-under for the day and one-under for the championship.

  14. Fowler climbingpublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Fowler -4 (7)

Rickie Fowler is enjoying a strong start to his second round. He started the day at two under, but has notched two birdies to move into tied sixth.

The American joins eight others at four under.

  15. McIlroy birdiespublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -4 Watson +1 (6)

Rory McIlroy cards his second birdie of the afternoon. A strong, confident putt from the world number four to put him four under.

It's par for Bubba, who ended up in the sand again at the sixth. I'm expecting him to get his bucket and spade out at this rate.

  16. Postpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Andrew Johnston - quickly becoming everyone's favourite golfer...

  17. Will Monty miss the cut?published at 16:17 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Montgomerie +4 (18)

Apologies Monty fans, we were fed duff info. It was his third shot into the 18th that we witnessed so he had a par putt to stay three over. He missed it, tapped in for a bogey and trudged off to sign for a second-round 75 and four over par total.

Could this be Monty's final appearance at The Open?

  18. A new dawn, a new Day?published at 16:15 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Day E (6)

Talking of weather, it doesn't appear to be affecting Jason Day.

What's a bit of wind when you're the world number one, anyway? Well, it was in yesterday's sunshine that Day struggled, carding two over.

He's back level with an encouraging three birdies in his first six holes on Friday, only blighted by that one bogey on the first.

  19. Will Monty make the weekend?published at 16:12 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Montgomerie +3 (17)

Colin Montgomerie's hopes of playing the final two rounds are hanging by the proverbial thread. He is three over, playing the last.

The Scot fires his approach to eight feet and he will have a birdie putt to potentially stay in the Championship.

The projected cut has just slid out to +2...

  20. Weather woes?published at 16:11 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

So, 10 of the current top 12 are back in the clubhouse on day two - did they get the pick of the weather?

The two who are still out there are Americans Steve Stricker and Billy Horschel, both at evens for the day and at four under in total.

Oh for a favourable tee time...
