  2. Spieth in danger of missing cutpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Spieth +3 (8)

The Postage Stamp strikes. Jordan Spieth finds the bunker at the front of the green that Rory McIlroy took six to get out of in a practice round earlier in the week.

Spieth's first effort makes it onto the green but it's not far enough up the slope and his ball horseshoes round the back of the bunker and drops back in the sand.

He gets out second time but two putts from eight feet for a double-bogey five. The projected cut line is +1 and the American is now back to +3, with the harder nine holes to come...

    Reed -3 (11)

Bogey, bogey. That's Patrick Reed's last two holes.

Add to that a bogey on the eighth a few holes ago and the American appears to be dropping out of contention...

  4. Rose throws club after fluffed shotpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

A rare display of frustration from Britain's Justin Rose as he fluffs an awkward shot on his way to a triple-bogey seven at the par four fourth hole.

    McIlroy -3 Matsuyama E Watson +1 (5)

Bubba Watson, one knee bent and the other almost outstretched behind him, flicks it up out the bunker and it skids across the green, perhaps a little further than he'd have hoped.

His putt just doesn't make it over a little lip on the cup and it will be a bogey for the American.

With the weather starting to clear, Rory McIlroy's start remains bright and he chips on to the green for a solid par.

And it's Hideki Matsuyama who breaks his run of opening pars with a birdie on the par three.

  6. Bubba's best? In the bunker...published at 15:55 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -3 Watson E (4)

"Best shot I've hit all week," says Bubba off the tee. But he's in the sand again on the fifth.

Rory McIlroy, perhaps after seeing Watson's shot carried left in the wind, goes right - but he has a lot of work to do on the par three.

  7. Hend makes his movepublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Hend -4 (7)

You're absolutely right Stuart, a terrible oversight.

Australia's Scott Hend is making moves despite the wind.

The 42-year-old has four birdies in his first seven holes and has moved to four-under for the tournament to be tied for sixth, a jump of 45 places.

  8. Birdie!published at 15:51 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Willett +2 (5), Day +1 (5)

That's more like it from Jason Day on the par-three fifth. Not easy this hole, it's long and attacking the flag brings problems aplenty if you get it wrong.

Day is on the green and has 10ft for birdie. He just shows the ball the hole and it dives in. Nice pace. Back to one over, back inside the cut line.

Danny Willett makes par and looks a little fed up.

  9. Surely not...published at 15:48 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Day +2 (4)

    Jason DayImage source, .

Jason Day has not missed a cut since January. That's the only one he missed this year too.

In his last five tournaments, he's been top 10 four times, so these struggles are somewhat unexpected.

At two over he remains a shot outside the cut line.  Louis Oosthuizen, Danny Willett and Matt Fitzpatrick are also on the same mark.

  10. McIlroy out of the roughpublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -3 Watson E Matsuyama +1 (4)

Rory McIlroy has to undertake some damage limitation after a wayward approach into some really rough stuff, but he neatly goes about his business and chips on to the green for a shot at par. And par it is for the Northern Irishman.

Bubba Watson nails one from the rough on the other side of the fairway with a healthy helping of club face to recover on the fourth, and he makes birdie.

Hideki Matsuyama continues his steady start. Par, par, par, par.

  12. Dropped shot for Spiethpublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Spieth +1 (6)

Oh dear Jordan Spieth. A smart bunker play leaves 5ft for par but even that is too much. He quickly taps in for bogey and you can tell he is absolutely fuming. Spieth is on a tour of Scottish bunkers right now.

  13. Reed drops anotherpublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Reed -4 (10)

Patrick Reed, the only man out there at the minute who looked like he had any chance of making a dent in Phil Mickelson's lead, has just posted another bogey.

That's two in three holes for the 25-year-old, with a par sandwiched between, and he's one over for the day.

It drops him to four under through 10 on day two.

  14. Bogey timepublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Willett +2 (5), Day +2 (5), Reed -4 (10)

Jason Day rolls in for par on the fifth, these players seem to be collectively struggling - Patrick Reed has just made bogey on 10. Danny Willett, playing with Day, drops a ball into the front of the cup for bogey of his own.

  15. Spieth woespublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Spieth E (5)

Jordan Spieth, hands on hips, questioning the world, questioning wind, questioning physics.

His swing looks a little lazy, particularly the follow through and he hooks his third shot into the par-five sixth. Bunker time.

  16. Monty's homecomingpublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Montgomerie +3 (15)

Colin Montgomerie is three over after a bogey at the par-four 15th.

Will the Scot be out there on Sunday at his home Open?

Well, he'll either need to make up a shot or two on his final three holes today to make the cut, or hope the weather deteriorates and leaves the rest of the field a difficult task.

  17. Blow wind, blowpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Ben Dirs
    BBC Sport at Royal Troon

"The rain has abated at Troon, the bad news for the late starters being that the wind has got up appreciably. And as any hacker will know, a high wind is more likely to wreck a card than a spot of rain."

  18. Hatton flies the flagpublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Hatton -2 (16)

Tyrrell Hatton is still in the race to be the best of the English.

The 24-year-old recovered from an early double bogey and sunk three birdies to put him on two-under, two shots behind Andrew Johnston, with two holes to play.

  19. Postpublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Day +2 (3), Willett +1 (3), Fowler -3 (3)

The Jason Day, Danny Willett and Rickie Fowler trio manage one birdie between them on three? Who got it? The world number one that's who.

Jason Day needs a run of these. At two over he is near the cut line and to be frank, tied 78th is just not good enough.

The fourth gives up a birdie chance, it's a par five and he's going for home in two. "FORE." That's way right.

  20. Rory's steady startpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    McIlroy -3 Watson +1 Matsuyama +1 (3)

Well, it's a decent recovery from Bubba, who chips out of the sand and comfortably on to the green.

But that is not enough for the American to rescue par, mind, and Watson now has two bogeys in his opening three holes on Friday.

Rory McIlroy has a shot at a birdie, but his curling putt just tickles the pin and it will be par for the 2014 winner. A steady start.

As for Matsuyama? Well he's par, par, par today.
