    Disaster for DJ.

He misses his bogey attempt. He marks the ball and walks off to the side to practice his technique.

The round is disintegrating before his eyes.

Now for the double bogey attempt, a few practice swings and he rolls it in.

A six for DJ and he goes to six-over.

He isn't the only one to struggle on the 11th, Danny Willett can only muster a bogey while Henrik Stenson keeps his cool for par.

  2. Kaymer in for parpublished at 21:49 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

    Kaymer -4 (14*)

Is this Martin Kaymer's week? A 15-footer for par on the fifth holds no problems for the German who rolls it in at pace to stay four under. Just the one dropped shot so far for the 2010 US PGA champion.

  3. Spieth and Bubba save parspublished at 21:45 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

    Spieth +2 (13). Watson +2 (13)

A terrific par save by Jordan Spieth on the 13th to stay two over. Bubba Watson also knocks to stay three over and on to the 14th they skip.

  4. DJ in troublepublished at 21:43 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

Dustin Johnson has just taken two shots to get out of a fairway bunker on the par four 11th.

His first attempt barely makes it out of the sand before rolling back in.

The second is successful but lands 35 yards from the pin, his fourth shot leaves him with a nine foot putt for a bogey.

Looks like another dropped shot for the US Open champ.

  5. Spieth strugglingpublished at 21:40

Spieth's driving accuracy is running at 33%, which is 19% below the PGA Tour average. Once again he's missed the fairway at 13, before coming up short from the bunker. His third shot isn't much cop, either...

  8. Beef conjures some magicpublished at 21:33

Bubba was all over the flag off the tee at 12 but tugged his shortish birdie putt left of the hole. Here's Beef after shanking his second at 15 and what a shot that is, shot of the day, pitching his ball under a tree branch, directly over the scoreboard and to within a few feet of the hole. Misses the par putt, unfortunately, drops to +1. Kaymer pars the fourth, stays one off the lead.

    +1 Willett (9)

The second most famous Willett, Danny's brother PJ, a friend of our live text, always gives a great alternative commentary....

  10. Rose wiltingpublished at 21:26

It's a bit of a grind for Justin Rose out there, he's just dropped a shot at 10 and is now two over. Baltusrol Golf Club was named after Baltus Roll, who farmed the land on which the course was built. In 1831, he was murdered at age 61 by two thieves who believed he had hidden a small treasure in his farmhouse on Baltusrol mountain. More of that on Wikipedia, I'd imagine.

Tell us who will win at Baltusrol this week - another first-time major winner, or one of the old guard?

  12. Big guns misfiringpublished at 21:20

Tony Finau, who showed so well at Troon, is having a shocker today, eight bogeys and eight over through 13. Clearly not an easy course, this - Matt Kuchar is five over after 12, former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel is five over after five, including a double at seven.

  13. Bogeypublished at 21:18 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

    E Stenson (9) +1 WIllett (9)

Henrik Stenson misses a five foot par putt and walks off of the ninth with a bogey while Danny Willett's 17-foot par putt stays on the green and he too is dropping.

  14. Birdiepublished at 21:16 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

    +4 Johnson (9)

That is the way to end a disastrous nine holes.

On the par three 210 yard ninth. DJ plants his tee shot 12ft from the hole and for the first time this round he makes no mistake to notch his first birdie and undo some of the earlier damage.

Four-over at the turn for the world number two.

  15. Kaymer bounces backpublished at 21:14

Andrew Johnston with another long-range birdie at 14, that's two in a row for the Londoner and he's back to level par. Spieth is absolutely shot with the driver, here he is playing his approach out of the rough at 11. It's decent, but no control from that stuff. Birdie from Kaymer, bouncing back at three after bogey at two, he's back to four under.

  17. Daly and Johnston go head to headpublished at 21:12 British Summer Time 28 July 2016

How about this for a revelation.

John Daly and Andrew 'Beef' Johnston have been hanging out and even had a drinking contest.

The pair have played together several times and after last year's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship they exchanged numbers.

Four weeks later they met again at the Turkish Airlines Open.

“He thought he could drink whiskey like me,” Daly said, external. “And that didn’t pan out too good. It was so funny.

“He came over to the hotel, we just started drinking and listening to music. He tried to keep up and he just couldn’t.”

A contest we would have loved to have witnessed.

  18. Pieters poisedpublished at 21:05

Here's Shane Lowry of Ireland with a good birdie putt at 11, he gets to +2. Thomas Pieters of Belgium is two under after birdies at 17 and 18. The 24 year old won twice on the European Tour last year and finished tied for 30th at his debut Open in Troon.

  20. Bubba acting the goatpublished at 20:59

The wind picking up now, which should mean scores will be higher for the late starters. Kaymer doesn't hit his birdie putt at 11, drops to three under. Bubba is all over the oche at the moment, a breath of wind and he falls apart. Iffy second at 10, scrubby third over the back, he's now putting for par from the fringe - with the toe end of his putter. Never seen that before, shot gone...
