Andy Sullivan is four under playing the eighth but he is in the deep stuff off the tee and although he is only a little over 100 yards from the green he can't advance his ball that far. And that ultimately proves costly for the Englishman as he drops to -3.

Emiliano Grillo with an outside look on the third to get to nine under. That's staying on the high side, tap-in par to stay clear on -8.

    +3 McIlroy +2 Mickelson -3 Day

Back to back birdies for Jason Day who moves to three under.

Phil Mickelson's birdie putt looks good, but it pops out and he has to settle for par.

Good bunker shot by Rory McIlroy. It pitches and runs towards the hole, leaving him with a five footer for par, but he misses it. Bogey and he drops his first shot of the day to card a 33 front nine.

Jason Day and Phil Mickelson pepper the flag on the 201 yard par three ninth.

But it's a different story for Rory McIlroy. As soon as he hits it you can tell he doesn't like the look of his tee shot. It lands in the bunker to the front right of the hole.

  4. Fowler grindingpublished at 21:40

Looks like a doozy of a day out there in New Jersey, the sun is out and the players are peppering the pins. But it's a bit of a grind for Rickie Fowler, the American bogeyed three, had parred everything else and is one under for the week.

    -1 Day +2 Mickelson, McIlroy

Phil Mickelson has a 10ft putt for birdie and he makes no mistake. He is slowly undoing the damage of that triple bogey at the first. He celebrates with a fist pump.

Rory McIlroy has a long putt, it's a good distance and leaves him a par chance which he nails.

Jason Day is back in the red with a birdie.

Rory McIlroy in a fairway bunker on the eighth, but his exit shot is not the best. It checks on the edge of the green and rolls back.

Jason Day and Phil Mickelson are both on for two and have chances for birdies.

  7. Walker stands firmpublished at 21:28

Jimmy Walker with a bump and run at nine and that was a beauty, perfectly paced and leaving him with a one foot tap-in to stay -7. Gregory Bourdy of France in good shape, he's three under after seven second-round holes.

Jason Day made a right mess of that hole.

He finishes with a double bogey.

No birdie for Rory on seven. A 12 footer that sneaks past the hole, but he makes par. Phil Mickelson leaves with par.

    -2 Day (6)

Fourth shot now for Day. It's not a bad chip but he still has a putt to make to leave with a bogey.

  10. Sullivan bogeypublished at 21:19

Shot gone for Sullivan at six after an unlucky bunker escape that got caught up in the rough, he drops to -4. Lingmerth of Sweden birdies the second after a wonderful approach and is three under.

    +2 McIlroy -2 Day (Both 6)

Jason Day with a tree in the way. He has to keep this low to get under the branches, he manages it and chips the ball out but straight into a bunker.

Plenty of sand to negotiate here and it isn't pretty. A clunk and his wedge shot flies over the green towards the fence.

Rory McIlroy second is a beauty, another birdie chance awaits the two-time champion.

    -2 Day (6)

Jason Day's tee shot on the seventh lands in the crowd on the right hand side of the fairway. It causes great excitement, they gather round it like they have just found a Pokemon.

  13. Grillo cookingpublished at 21:11

Andy Sullivan with his second at six, after two straight birdies, and he's found a greenside bunker. Grillo crackerjacks his drive down the first, but it's found the lip of a bunker. You or I (unless you're a pro golfer, in which case I'm sorry) would have been happy to bunt that out, but Grillo flops it into orbit and onto the middle of the green.

    +2 McIlroy (6)

Jason Day's birdie putt is just a few centimetres wide and the defending champion chirps away at his ball.

Phil Mickelson has the line, but not the length, just par for the five-time major winner.

But it's another birdie for Rory. Two in his last three holes. The fightback is on.

Jimmy Walker is hot on Grillo's tail, here he is bending in that birdie putt at eight to get to -7. Streb pops in for birdie on 15, his sixth, to move to -5. Plenty of birdies out there...

    Rory McIlroy on the sixth.

He's 144 yards from the hole and wills his second shot on.

"Go, Go," urges the two-time champion and his shot is good, landing a few feet from the hole to set up a birdie chance.

Jason Day, is less happy about his second shot which leaves him a 26ft putt for the red numbers.

  18. Grillo birdies 18, gets to -8published at 20:58

Grillo makes a bit of a meek fist of his eagle attempt at 18 but pops in for birdie to lead by two.

  19. Dubuisson gives it some hammerpublished at 20:54

Dubuisson of France has just hit the longest drive at 17 today, he absolutely piled into that and it's travelled about 320 yards. He's one over today and level for the week. Jimmy Walker with a wedge at eight, birdie chance.
